Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

We’ve had some fun picture threads lately that have remained mercifully free of bickering or controversy. Let’s keep the good vibes rolling.

I’m hoping this will become a long running thread capturing pictures of some of our favorite outdoor load outs.

Every post must include a mention and/or picture of the gun you carried in the great outdoors that particular outing. This isn’t a general non-firearm gear thread as that’s outside the scope of THR. But if other gear is in the pictures, no problem. BUT THERE HAS TO BE A GUN, or we’ll get shut down. Also, let’s not debate or disparage anyone’s choices. This isn’t the thread to debate the effectiveness of bear spray.

Tell us what you carried, your ammo choice if you like, and maybe the purpose of the outing and load out choice.

I was off work today and had some time to go out for a nice hike. I took my time and enjoyed it. I saw some deer a smooth green snake, a marmot, and all kinds of birds. Weather was great.

Mountain lions are the biggest predator here so I carried a Sig Sauer P220 chambered in 10mm auto. It was loaded with Underwood Ammo 140 gr Extreme Penetrators. The bullets are made by Lehigh but the cartridges are loaded by Underwood.

Normally I am trucking along but I was under a doctor’s orders to keep my heart rate low. So I had time for a few pictures in the woods.

I also carried a WE Knife Co. Chimera knife. It’s a 3.9” S35VN bladed flipper knife. Very handy and very comfortable to use.

And finally I also was using a 48” Rowan Tree walking stick. Rowan is also known as mountain ash. It was made by a man in Ireland and makes for a nice hiking stick.

All in all it was a very peaceful time. I saw no one and just listened to some relaxing music on a single ear bud. Couldn’t have been much better.

I like taking pictures so here’s some better shots of the gear I carried.

So what did you carry into the outdoors today?

Aren't those "140 gr Extreme Penetrators" a tad light for Mountain Lions ?

How many of you are looking forward to fall hunting/hiking????
Heat index in SC 100 today. IDA hitting LA! Looking forward to fall temps and change of the seasons.
I did go hiking in the Shenandoah National Park last week. My carry was a Taurus 357mag model 605. I also walked with a hiking stick that I made myself from a sapling I cut in Wisconsin near my tree stand.

I need to make a few more staffs. My wife called this one my NINJA staff. I think it's more John Muir.

My Henry All Weather 45.70, on the Everglades Trail, which runs north to south for 39 miles east of Everglades National Park.

A comforting companion where Alligators, Crocodiles and Burmese Pythons room freely..
Im curious we're you open carrying it or was it in a sheath? Just dont really here anyone in Florida carrying a rifle on hikes

Yesterday my wife and I enjoyed the outdoors. Today we're paying for it.

Despite not being in the best shape, we decided to go hike a peak that we had previously ignored repeatedly. Long story short, started at just under 9,000' and topped out at 11,000'. 7.4 miles round trip and took about 5.5 hours. It was a good trail until the last 0.7 miles which was steep and rocky.

Here's the steep bit:

But the views from the top were pretty good.

Trying to keep things light, I only took one gun. Being as the high country forested hills don't seem to have a whole lot of large animals wandering it, I thought a heavy magnum revolver might not be the best choice. So I took the G22/.357 Sig with two mags of 125gr HST, and two mags of my 124gr TCFP FMJ handload. I'll probably get a 10mm by the end of the year, but honestly at 1,425fps (or maybe faster from the 4.5" barrel) that .357 Sig load is no slouch.

Not today but Saturday morning and Sunday morning. A 12 gauge Benelli Super Black Eagle 11, for Dove season. Oh, the Glock 23 was in the truck!

Beautiful place @WrongHanded !!!!
Jealous! Never shot a 357 sig maybe someday.

Kind of a last hurrah for summer. Before too long, I'll be posting pics of the hikes I take with the .410 :)

As for this weekend, not much new.

IMG_20210906_161952128.jpg

The water was really low, a little over 50 cubic feet per second, not good for boating or fishing but makes for great ambience. IMG_20210906_162006515.jpg

Had the G29 with me.

It occurred to me some of you may be interested in what a Superfund site looks like 30 years after the fact. Here's an image of Uravan, Colorado today. "Cleanup" started 30+ years ago. I was hiking both above and below this site. Incredible country.

This is where a lot of the nuclear fuel that got us through the Cold War came from. Mine portals are visible from the road.

This is how many people remember the place,

Uravan.jpg

I remember pools of iridescent water and company housing visible from the highway before the town was shut down. There were a lot of guys, many of them veterans, who I went to college with. They qualified for retraining as part of the superfund project. They were all a lot of fun and a pleasure to get to know. I looked up several links about Uravan but non of them seemed to capture the memories of the people I've met who lived and worked there. It was a company town but it was also a community. People have ties to that blank spot on the map. I feel sorry they can't go back.

Thanks for the pictures and the explanation!

Like the Glock 29 :)

Anyone out hiking/hunting this week?
I'm going through woods walk withdrawals!

I am prepping for trips to the Smokies, Daytona Beach, and Yellowstone. My carry handguns are going to be my 415 41 mag and 605 357 mag.
20210910_131941.jpg

I was looking for a L Frame size 44mag before my Yellowstone trip. With the current market I was unsuccessfully. I have not seen any ammo or handguns in 44mag or 45lc +p.

If you are out in the woods/water/trails please post pictures
