Guys if you were going to have a cheaper backup gun for ccw which would you rather have the makarov or the tokarev. I bought a Makorov and like it a lot my Dad is wanting a tokarev. Which of these two do you feel is better and why.By the way we both have .45's for our primary guns but wanted something else cheaper like for the glovebox or just to put in the coat pocket for a quick trip to town.

Makarov. I love Tokarevs, but other than penetration, Makarov pistols and ammo are better in just about any category you can name, for CCW use.

I would look hard at the surplus CZ 52 and CZ 82 (in 9x18Mak).

I think both are better than what they can be compared to (the Mak and Tok) and right now they are pretty cheap ($150 and $250) or so.

Plus, the CZ 82 holds 12 rounds over the maks 8 (think it's 8).

I like the 52 and totally love the 82!

I had two Tokes in 9mm Luger, Norinco. They worked, they were cheap, they were flat. The safety sux and it's a single action gun. It's not safe to carry on half cock either. The only safe way to tote this gun is condition three.

I'd take the Mak in a heartbeat over the Toke, JMHO. The Toke wasn't terribly accurate either, about 4" groups at 25 yards best off sand bags. Couldn't hit squat with the thing off hand. LOL They did function well, I'll give 'em that. They were also very flat and fairly light and carried well IWB. But, the Mak is definitely the better choice.

BTW, I don't know about the Makarov, but the sights on these Norinco Tokarevs sucked, too.

In my opinion, neither round is optimal. I rank the 9x18 in the same category as .380 and wouldn't trust it to penetrate enough unless it's FMJ. The 7.62x25 would probably over-penetrate and nobody makes an HP for it except for Wolf (and who knows if that's any good).

However, if I had to choose, I'd go with the Mak. I can shoot my Mak a lot more accurately (although mine's an East German with a sweet trigger) and it's a bit more ergonomic.

Definitely Makarov... it is totally reliable without any problems of misfeeding... I have one in 9 x 18 made by Russia, and it is going to be a collector's item because the pool of Makarov in Makarov caliber are now exhausted.

If KGB trust their lives to it, why shouldn't you...? :D

I traded in my Tokarov because it has reliability issues, every three rounds or so, it will fail to feed and the case will be stuck half way between the chamber and the slide. Plus TT rounds will pierce light body armor, and it is not a good defensive ammo in CQ situations. Tokarov is really a combat pistol where as Makarov should really be a carry pistol.

Makarov >>> Tokarov (in reliability)
Makarov >>> Tokarov (in compactness)
Tokarov > Makarov (in power)

I prefer the Tokarev round. Makarovs pistols fit my hand really poorly, CZ52's are cheap, and have balance like a 1911.

And to think, I like big, heavy rounds, not small fast ones. Don't that beat all?

The 7.62x25 would probably over-penetrate and nobody makes an HP for it except for Wolf (and who knows if that's any good).
Based on the test done by JE223 in this thread, 7.62x25 ball penetrates to about the same depth as 9mm ball.

Agree that there's not much in the way of HP ammo available. Stay tuned, there may be some tests on some JHP coming. ;)

Back to the original question. I'd probably go with the Mak--it's more concealable.

Pistolet Makarova

Both have been used to defend our glorious Motherland and/or to support the suppression of capitalist imperialism in our fraternal socialist brother states!!

However, of the two, Comrade, I would rather carry the Makarov PM.

Comrade Makarov was declared a hero of the Soviet Union for this.

His selfless dedication in creating this masterpiece for the benefit of the Russian people means we should carry it with pride!!

Not to belittle Comrade Tokarov, but the PM is a better weapon.

I carry a PM made by our fraternal socialist brothers in Bulgaria.

Comrad Stalin will be most disappointed by your comment, Denfoote, because Tokarov was his favorite combat pistol until the Rightist Reformist Faction took over Comrad Stalin's government and replaced his favorite pistol with the invention of Comrad Makarov. haha...:D

Actually, Stalin was reputed to have a collection of pocket pistols. Rumor has it, he was partial to 1910/1914 Mausers.

Comrade Stalin was indeed a glorious leader of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War, but he was not foward thinking enough to see that the capitalist west had used the opportunity of our distraction to outstrip us in small arms development!!

It took the genius of Comrades Malenkov and Khrushchev to spur the development that caused the superior Soviet economy to not only catch up, but exceed the soft imperial west in this endeavor!!!

Comrade Makarov was a true hero of the Soviet People!!

Ahhh but to see the PM used in battle against decadent, morally corrupt Americans!! :D :D
