    Howdy folks...

    I'm fairly new (first time post anyway) to the forum but thought I'd introduce myself here by letting you know that I'm one of the co-creators of AmmoSeek.com. We are always looking for constructive feedback from fellow gun people to help make AmmoSeek better for all.

    We launched the site back in February after working on it over the summer/fall and have been working on improvements ever since.

    Today we index 31 online retailers and we offer the ability to search for in-stock shotgun, rifle, and handgun ammo by caliber, grain, shot size, and more. We like to call AmmoSeek the "Google" for ammo. At least that's our aim. At the very least it can be a huge time-saver for the online ammo shopper.

    So my point here is to introduce myself and request that you check out the site and send us some feedback, either as a reply here, or using our feedback form on the site. We'd like to know what you think of the site and its usefulness and we are always looking for suggestions for improvement too.

    Also note that we do not sell ammunition, we just provide a service to help gun "nuts" like us find choice ammo at affordable prices online.

    Thanks for your time and happy shooting!

    -Marc

    Yes, we noticed the existence of AmmoEngine during the development phase of AmmoSeek. It did not deter us from continuing work on AmmoSeek because (and yes I'm biased) AmmoSeek is just better...

    Why do I think it's better even though I'm biased?

    • AmmoEngine doesn't exclude out-of-stock items. AmmoSeek does.
    • AmmoEngine doesn't include shotgun ammo. AmmoSeek does.
    • AmmoEngine includes only 17 (functioning retailers). AmmoSeek has 31 and counting.
    • AmmoEngine doesn't allow search by grain weight, manufacturer, ammo type, or arbitrary keywords. AmmoSeek does.
    • AmmoEngine only updates their data once per day. AmmoSeek updates between 4 and 24 times daily (depending on the retailer).

    In fact there are a few other sites that do similar things as well. Here is the full list we have discovered in our research. Perhaps some of these may be of use to some others on the forum here:

    * http://www.ammospy.com/
    * http://ammoengine.com/
    * http://gun-deals.com/
    * http://ammonow.com/

    Please do your own research and if you find something that AmmoSeek lacks then let us know and we'll consider adding it. The more useful tools we have to find ammo the better!

    Thanks for the feedback!

    You need to add on primers and some of the popular powders also. More important than loaded rounds for some of us. I refuse to purchase ammo at these prices. I am slowly accumulating brass, dies, etc to load more different calibers than I would really care to load. The shortage of primers and powder is the only thing holding me back.

    Riss,

    Your request is something we get a lot. It's probably the number 1 requested feature.

    Adding reloading components is already on our To-Do list.

    Thanks!

    Shipping.

    If you could include the full price delivered to my Zip Code you'd be about perfect.

    ArmedLiberal,

    We've been trying to figure out a way to do shipping calculations the "right" way, but doing it properly is extremely difficult (if not impossible) with the way most retailer sites are setup. Most of them require you to put in a credit card (as do most sites) before shipping is calculated. This is hard to automate and resource-intensive to an already resource-intensive operation (indexing ammo at retailer sites).

    Also, calculating shipping of ammo is more difficult because we don't know how many boxes one may be interested in purchasing.

    That being said we are working/researching the best ways to add some kind of shipping calculation into our results and hope to add it in the future.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

    Not to derail, but really? People give credit card numbers before they know how much they are paying? Learn something new every day here.

    Looks good. I'll start using this along with ammoengine in head-to-head comparisons. Note: I did NOT find the errors on your site which I find on ammoengine. So you get an attaboy for that.

    Is it possible to add a column indicating if shipping is included in the price? For example, ammoman.com include's shipping in their price.

    i like this, bookmarking it.
    I usually use gun-deals and check my favorite sites.

    But this one seems a bit more comprehensive than ammoengine

    I've used ammoengine quite a bit and must say that this site is an improvement. Thank you for the hard work. Is there any way you can make ammo prices cheaper?!?!? That would make you the most awesome website ever! Haha!

    A column or something that would describe the shell material; i.e... brass, aluminum, steel, etc.
    Not a huge issue, but just something I thought I saw on another ammo search site.

    Hi DataMonkey. I'm Mike Miller, the programmer for AmmoSeek.com.

    We had to be judicious in how many columns of data we put in the search results or it would become too wide. For this (since AMMOMAN was the only one with free shipping at the the time) we made sure the product description has "FREE SHIPPING" on all of AMMOMAN's items.

    Great idea, but there are two reasons why this wasn't done:

    (1) Not all retailers make this piece of information available in their product descriptions, so in a lot of cases we'd have to leave it blank or guess.
    (2) As mentioned above, we had to pick and choose what info we wanted to put on the results page, or the results table would end up too wide.

    This is the first time I've seen this suggestion, but it's a good one. If others indicate a desire for this as well, we'll consider implementing it.

    Thanks for chiming in!

    The only ammo I buy is rimfire, but it's good to know you have created a clearing house for this info. Duly bookmarked. Thanks!

    I got really excited for a second until I saw it was a data entry error :) I guess they did make the ammo prices cheaper!

    Nice concept, I'll be using it.

    One boo boo I spotted, though. Search for .44 mag, and Bass Pro comes up first, because the engine seems to think it's $35 for a box of 100. I got really excited, before I noticed it was a mistake.

    RyanM,

    Thanks for pointing out that discrepancy. You found a bug I was unaware of, and I was able to fix it last night. (But then Bass Pro's site became inaccessible for a few hours, so I was unable to re-crawl their site to update our search engine until the overnight run). The prices are appearing correctly now as far as I can tell.

    We greatly appreciate being notified of things like this so we can make sure our data is as accurate as possible. Thanks!

    41magsnub,

    I couldn't find what you're referring to, so I can only assume that the error was on Cabela's site, and they've since fixed it. Let me know if you notice any continuing problems (either here or, preferably, via our web site).

    Thanks!

    You should really get shipping in there. Even approximate shipping would make a big difference. "Ammoman is always $0, and everybody else just use the UPS ground rate" is good enough. You can calculate it yourself, by going to this page of UPS', and downloading a rate sheet for the warehouse of every dealer. Just look up the user's zip code in all the rate sheets, and wham.
