If a new hunting rifle was going to go into production this year, what three short action, long action, and magnum calibers (9 calibers total) should the manufacturer offer? The rifle is custom grade and costs between $1300 to $2500. It is based on newly designed Mauser/M70 hybrid action, this action is naturally very strong.

I will be the boring one here. In SA: .22-250, .243, and .308. LA: .25-06, .270, .30-06. In Magnum: 7mm RM, .300WM, .375 H&H. What does any other caliber really offer that those don't?

I like it, but I'd replace .22-250 w/.223 Rem, same applications but more common, plentiful and varied thanks to the success of the AR15, of course all the SA cartridges you listed are based upon the .308 and that would simplify things.

Short action: .223, .243, .308
Long action: .270, .30-06, .35 Whelen

Those are what I would want at least... Honorable mentions go to the .260, 7mm family, .338 WM, and .375 H&H

.223, .243, .257, .308 (yah, I know...)

7x57, .270, 30-06 (arguably a 7x57 fits better through a long action

7 Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag

If it is custom, and costs that much, I don't think the intended buyers need to worry about ammo cost.

Short Action: .22-250, 7mm-08, .300 WSM
Standard Action: 6.5x55 Swede, .280 Remington, .375 Ruger
Magnum: 7mm Remington, .338 Winchester, .416 Rigby

Short: 260 Rem, 308, 300 WSM.
Long: 30-06, 6.5x55, 7x57
Magnum 338 Win Mag, 7mm Rem mag, 375 H&H
Thats my list and I'm sticking to it :D I will make honorable mention for the 25-06, 280Rem, 270 Win/WSM, 6.5-284 and 300 Win Mag.

I'll pick one of each...

SA 260 with 1:8 twist
LA 280 with 1:9.25 twist
MAG 340 Weatherby 1:10 twist

Short Action: .223, .308, 300 WSM
Long Action: 25-06, .270, 30-06
Long Action (Magnum): 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag

How custom are we talking? Call and order custom or production line custom? What are the actual action lengths 2.8-3.2 short 3.4-3.75? What will the diameter be?
We all have our preference and peeves, but depending on the specs some rounds will or wont work as well as we would like.

If its going to be a standard production unit with spme custom features, or be orderable in custom configurations, then i would suggest sticking to rounds that are in general use and sell well. .223/5.56, 22-250, .243, 30-06 etc. I would also offer the option (at a small premium) to have the gun chambered for a list of less common rounds and wilcats.

If were talking a true custom rifle better be prepared to chamber anything the customer wanta that will fit in the action.

I'll also step up and address my own pet peeve of late - the lack of iron sights or even the ability to order them. I was going to order a rifle from ER Shaw but they will not install iron sights. For that kind of money, I find that lack inexcusable. Instead I tracked down a VZ24 action and am proceeding with a custom built on it.

At least offer varied sight options. Not all of us are interested super long range shots with a super high power scope.
