Like the title says, I've been in conversation with a guy over on MGO who has had his Universal M1 .30 cal. for sale for a couple of weeks. I've asked him if he would consider a straight trade for my unfired FNP-357 and he has responded that he would. I'm ambivalent about proceeding and was hoping that you folks could help me in my decision. I'm interested in the M1 primarily for pleasure shooting but wonder if it would also be an appropriate deer hunting gun. I already have a Winchester Model '94 .30-30 and a Mosin Nagant M91/30 in addition to my 20ga shotty; all of which I consider appropriate for deer hunting under the proper conditions. The seller purchased it from an aging neighbor who purchased it around '93 and from all indications it has had less than 200 rounds through it. Here's a link to his offering: http://www.migunowners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68415

and here's a pic of what I'm offering in trade.

Dollar wise, I would say that I'm probably receiving a little less but am thinking that the M1 will increase in value. What do you folks think? Thanks.

Hi,

Probably not a good idea for Deer. It could be done, but... meh....

Now... is it a good idea to trade?

IMO no.

Universal made some iffy carbines and some that worked just fine. The FNP is a nice decent pistol that I would rather own.

But that is what I would do. Do you want the carbine more? or the pistol?

Now, remember, .30 carbine ammo is fairly spendy, more-so than the 9mm.

Now, you will get some people who will like the carbine and some will like the pistol. The only opinion that matters is yours. Once you know all the facts, you have to make that decision. Or, just give me the pistol..

No way. Universal M1s I believe were made in Hialeah Florida and do not have all parts interchangeability with military issue M1s. I might buy one for cheap on a whim but would never trade an FN for one.

I consider the .30 carbine a little light for deer. But then its all about shot placement. I would not trade. I beleive fnp will increase in value faster than the carbine. Just my 2 cents.

I would prefer original military M1 Carbines over the later commercial versions. Some of the commercials were OK but then some had reliability problems.
As some people have already pointed out, the .30 Carbine round, while it looks favorable compared to .357 Magnum, is not truly a hunting round. The carbine was intended for "rear echelon" troops who were not really intended to be meeting the enemy -- that is support troops and such. That it actually made it into service by soldiers who used it effectively in close combat is a testament to the light carbine, but for deer there are so many better calibers and rifles available I just have to wonder why people would use it.

Keep in mind that while I say this I own a carbine my father brought back from Korea, and Inland with which I will never part.
BUT, it's not a hunting rifle.

The .30-30 or the Mosin will do fine for deer.

Military carbines "may" go up in value ... I don't think commercial ones will ....
