I have for a while been thinking about a black powder revolver. I have never owned/fired one, but from what I have read, I like the concept. Please help me if I have some of this wrong....
1. I can cast my own ammunition from various sources of lead? fairly easily and inexpensively

2. I can actually concoct black powder, as opposed to buying it

3. Buying components for shooting this gun is much cheaper than buying, say .45 long colt ammunition for a cartridge gun

I know there are other considerations, but I wanted to start here. I am thinking of trading an old model 28 I have on a blue steel Ruger old army my local shop has...I would appreciate any thoughts you would share...

Thanks!

1) Yes you can get Lead from different sources but one place I suggest is Tire shops & get their Adhesive Wheel Weights because they are relatively cheap & are real close to Pure Lead compared to the Clip on variety.

2) Yes you can make your own Black Powder by following the recipe that many here use & just buying your supplies to manufacture it from various sources but unless you have patience, a little experience with the powder in general, & are real careful, I would suggest you wait on that.

3) Yes & is a whole lot more fun too.
On average my per shot ratio is $.20 a shot & that is using 30gr. FFFG Goex, Remington #11's & what little I may buy in Lead to cast my own Conicals & Balls.

Considering you can get a new Pietta or used Uberti BP revolver for just over $200, I would keep the m28. The ROA price is on the high side, lots of them on gunbroker with no sales, their price well come down. You can get into a brass frame BP for under $200. Try it and see if you like it, some folks don't.

Smokin Gun: I don't have a picture of the 28 available; it is a 4" "pre-28", gun (made prior to stamping the model 28 in the frame)...I think Georgia State Patrol weapon? I would think it is worth around $400.

I would keep the 28 depending on my collection and save for the ROA I like all cb but the ROA is something else I have 2 and have a blast with them Took some time to really figure out how to shoot them

im shootin at about 10.5 cents/ shot with 30g pyro p an a rb (i bought a box of 1000 #10 cci primers for $30 which helps on cost) cast bullits cost me about 1.2 cents each. i am finding out reloading 45 colt may be even cheaper ~7 cents each.... if you ever decide on a conversion later. go with the ROA for sure

depending on how much you shoot though it might not be worth making the bp... say less then 900 shots/yr@ about 3-mebbe4lbs of powder about 50-60$.... probably dont bother with anything fancy. it it fun to see what you can do if you do try it though.

Good commercial grade 3 f pistol powder goes for $8.00 to $12.00 for a pound.Homemade powder still has to be ''corned'',meshed and graded. For survivalist purposes,it's good to know how,but it's really not cost effective.

The REAL saveings is when you get into casting you own projectiles...which,while we're on the subject ,you can get a conversion cylinder for the Ruger to shoot cartridges, but you can't get a black powder cylinder for the Smith and Wesson.

Fat Boy sound advice was given:

that s&w 28 is a highway patrol model. if it were me i keep it, its a fine piece.

the roa is a great gun, the prices people are trying to get for them aren't however. as stated above the prices will come down on them.

i want some powder for 8-12 bucks a lb! where!? cheapest i can find is 14$/lb with a 10 lb order min shipped an hazmat included or do you buy local? i agree about roa's being overpriced... but they dont make 'em anymore too, you could always reload bp into the 28's cartridges if'n ya wanna lol
