Transition To Carry At Home

I have small children, so I put the carry gun away when I come home. Rolling around on the floor with the kids and a gun would be stupid.

I only carry in the yard or garage, rarely ever in the house. But with no kids in the house, I’m never more than arms reach away from a Smith & Wesson.

The only time I don't carry is when I'm in the shower or asleep. (A few legally-limited situations excepted.) The only time recently that I have been disarmed for very long was a couple of weeks ago when I was on pain meds following a surgery. I kept that short because I'd rather be armed and in some manageable pain than disarmed and incoherent.

All of my grandkids that are old enough to notice know that I always have a gun on me. I don't leave it around the house and they've learned that it's not good to run up to give me a hug in the grocery store from the right side. One of them got a pretty good bonk on his head from my gun a year or two ago doing that. (BTW, if you've never been ambushed with hugs by your grandkids in the grocery store, you're missing out on one of the greatest joys in life. If I'd have known that grandkids were this much fun, I would have had them first. Or as my Dad says, "Grandkids are your reward for letting your own kids live." :D ) I get down and play with them all of the time and the gun doesn't cause any problems at all.

Kel-Tec PF9 (or, sometimes, a P32) on my hip when up, and off when not. I'm in and out a lot on my days off and don't like taking it off and putting it back on. I'm used to this; been carrying gear on my belt, beginning with a FD radio, since I was fifteen years old. My cellphone rides on the belt as well, and weighs barely less than the P32, if at all.

My house doesn't lend itself well to darting about it easily to fetch a firearm stashed in another room.

I don't "feel threatened enough" to carry at home. In fact, I don't feel threatened enough to carry anywhere else I go. But, should that change, it will be very sudden and very unexpected.

When I get home I empty my pockets on the counter attached to my kitchen and place my EDC and speed loader on top of a dresser in my bedroom. I have pistols in hidey holes by the front and back doors. Only my wife and son and oldest grandson know where they are. All my children are grown and my grandkids range from mid teens to mid twenties.
I also have the benefit of owning a well trained Rottweiler and Weimer. I trained dogs in the military many years ago and both do not allow anyone, expect family members and close friends, into my house w/o approval from me or my wife. If someone where to kick in my front door they would have more than a pissed off old man to worry about and those dogs would allow me more than enough time to arm myself.

I have a good friend, he lives in Ontario, Canada, a Jamaican. He has a saying, I have never forgotten it. "If it don't go so, it nearly go so" that fits a lot.

Glock 19 on belt when dressed, outside, or in. And a cell phone.

Not dressed in going out the door clothes IE Track Pants, dressing gown with reinforced pocket, Glock 19 and Cell phone.

No real worry in this, not paranoid in the least, but I come from places were carrying a self defense handgun is not allowed, UK/Australia/Canada.

So whilst I am now a Citizen of this wonderful State of Florida, I can, and do!

Sometimes I keep my gun in my pocket after getting home, but more often I put the gun into the GunVault in my bedroom after entering the house. I do keep a second GunVault in my workroom at the far end of my house, and feel pretty confident that in case of need I can get to one of these two guns pretty quickly. For me, leaving a gun on a counter or table is not acceptable because occasionally we have grandchildren in the house. I don't want to get in the habit of placing a gun in an unsecured place and then accidentally doing so when children are around.

If you really feel threatened enough to carry in your own home, I think you should move! Remaining on high alert 24-7 will wear out your adrenal glands!

There is stuff in the bedroom that I can grab if I really need to, but I am glad to disarm when I enter my home.

I don't feel threatened, but I do live in the suburbs of the 4th largest city in the US, and I've been a victim of armed robbery in a smaller Texas city years ago. Plus, weird (criminal) stuff happens in my "nice" neighborhood just like in other urban and suburban areas.

Since my safe is upstairs in my bedroom closet (we don't have downstairs bedrooms), that is a heck of a run to go get a gun if I'm in another part of the house. So, it's just easier to keep a gun with me just like I do all day when I'm out of the house.

On the other hand, I have a friend of mine that puts his carry gun on the kitchen counter when he gets home. He has no kids at home anymore. However, he can be as far as 45 feet from that kitchen counter or his gun safe if someone were to break into his suburban home. And his neighborhood has gone downhill to the point it got redistricted to rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

Anyway, people do what they feel is necessary. Works for me. :)

I guess I am the oddball, I don't like to carry on my person in the car, it's an hour for me to get from my home to anywhere, and my preferred iwb spot makes for a poor draw from the seat belt. It goes in the center console and stays there.

At home are assorted hand cannons and rifles up high out of reach, I have two kids and a third on the way, my oldest is rock solid on gun safety, he just got his first bolt action 22. The youngest is getting there. when the baby gets moving around I will probably have to change my tactics until he can be trained. Probably going to have to switch to some kind of home carry or some kind quick access "box"

Like commygun, I pocket carry & it stays on me till I go to bed.

It's not a decision based on fear or level of threat, but on firearm security. If it's on me, I know what condition its in (condition 1; loaded w round chambered), and I know who has control of it (me!).

I do carry at home but for me it's not about fear but habit.

7 years ago my CCW instructor challenged our class to get in the habit of going armed all the time, 6 months into it I figured out how, pocket carry.

Now my LCP is with me all the time I'm wearing something with a pocket, if needed I have it and that's my starting point. I also carry another gun when out and about but it all starts with pocket carry.

My Glock 23 goes in the waist band as the pants go on in the morning and then comes out when I get ready for bed in the evening. It is comfortable and there really is no reason to not continue carrying when I get home.

Ther is really no reason to believe there is any less of a chance you will need the gun at home than when out and about. Also, if you just continue to carry at home, rather than removing the gun, you handle it less which is safer to me. In other words, if you take the gun off when you get home, then decide to go out and want your gun, you have to handle it again, then get home and take it off again? To me, comfortable all-day carry is the answer.

^^^This.

I always pocket carry around the house (P3AT) and when I go somewhere it stays in my pocket and I put on my G26/IWB. When I get home, I always get more comfortable and change clothes and put away my CCW (G26).

I do keep a home defense gun (G17) in a quick access safe by my bed as well.

(Florida Concealed) had a similar, the same actually. Bob, a firearms Instructor laid it on the line. If your pistol is not on your person, always, you are not armed! I agree, and follow that because I believe!

Sitting here now Track Pants on, G19 and IPhone on.

I have a finger pad Gun Vault conveniently located on each floor of the house. I keep a hand gun in one that is in condition 1 as a home defense gun, 24/7.

There's also enough room in each Gun Vault to put my carry piece, so I can easily take it off and secure it (holstered), but still have it accessible, if I go back out and want it with me.

I personally do not allow for unsecured firearms in my house. It's on my person or locked up... period.

Having a Gun Vault on each floor makes this easy.

I just put it on like putting my wallet in my pocket. If you only carry when you feel threatened, when do you carry and what could you do to avoid those areas?

I have kids and kid's friends at my house, so leaving guns out is out. I carry from getting up to going to bed. Am I likely to need one at home, I don't know; but I'd sure feel stupid if it was in the safe when I needed it.

I don't carry in the house. I carry when I walk the perimeter of my property though. This used to be a quite neighborhood but an incident on Sat. changed all of that with a full blown man hunt. Dogs, helicopters and plenty of police action. They went to a lot of trouble to find someone. I believe the fugitive was either on our property or near it at least once. I took my dog and checked the perimeter 3 times before they located the person they were looking for. Made for an exciting afternoon. Never did find out who they were after but BP was in on it. Canada is about 100 miles north of me.

can anyone recommend ...

a good and comfortable tactical vest to sleep in ?

p.s.

Typically I don't carry in the house but if I'm home alone and working in the backyard I have the house locked up and my KelTec P3AT in my front right pocket.
