Traveling through NY with a shotgun

Could anyone tell me if it is legal to travel to NY with a tactical shotgun. I already know to leave my handguns at home but can I carry my Mossberg 500 say in the trunk with shells elsewhere just in case of trouble.

As far as I am aware, there is no restriction on possessing an unloaded shotgun in at least most of upstate New York (i.e., outside of New York City), but I have not researched the actual state statutes or the local regulations.

Check with a lawyer who knows before you goes.

NYC is another story entirely.

Keep in mind when people say NYC, that means the five boroughs. Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Queens and Manhattan.
Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties) and the rest of the state are fine.

If you keep your shotgun cased, unloaded and locked in the trunk, you`ll be all right in NYS except for NYC.
It is illegal to keep a loaded rifle or shotgun in your vehicle .

It is difficult to get to long island without passing though the 5 boroughs. You would have to ferry from Connecticut. I think.

I believe you are correct. I know there used to be a ferry from Ct, don`t know if it still is in service. I used to have relatives in the NYC & Nassau, Suffolk county area but they either moved away or died.

I'm pretty sure the ferry still runs. I see one from the beach going out to LI, I live on the Sound. I think the ferry port is actually just 10 minutes or so from here.

You can transport a long gun through NYC as long as you don't make a stop and it adheres to other restrictions. As a resident of upstate NY, I can transport a handgun through NYC locked as your would a long gun. However, no stopping. IE, I can take my firearms from Rockland or Westchester CO to Suffoulk or Nassau Co passing through the Bronx and Queens. I can then unlock the handgun and CC in Nassau or Suffolk.

I believe you'd be okay with a normal shotgun in NY state but your "tactical" shotgun may be a problem. I understand NY still has a ban on so-called "assault weapons" and that may prohibit your "tactical" shotgun. I'm not too familiar with NY's law but here in NJ if it has the typical pistol grip and folding stock it would be illegal. Be very careful in NY or NJ!

This is only partly correct regarding New Jersey:

Semi-auto rifle is illegal with folding stock plus pistol grip (two evil features)

Semi-auto shotgun is illegal with magazine holding more than six rounds

Semi-auto shotgun is illegal with pistol grip.

Last time I looked, a pump shotgun has no restriction on magazine length and there is no problem combining pistol grip with folding stock (or even the dreaded bayonet lug ) on a pump shotgun.

Bushmaster is correct, I failed to notice that the OP had specified a pump gun. NJ does not (yet!) demonize pump shotguns. NY law may be different. Be careful!

One more thing
You can drive through NJ if you meet FOPA requirements.
You cannot drive in and about NJ with a long gun if you do not have a NJ Firearms Purchaser's ID

No normal person can get a permit to carry a handgun
