Due to an insane deal, my dad and I are the proud new owners of an HKUSP and a smith and wesson, both .45ACP. No books with the smith but it is all stainless, has a hammer drop on the slide, adjustable sights, holds 8, external extractor I think. They both seem very new.

I am disappointed with both the SA triggers. The HK creeps and is heavy and the smith Is TOO HEAVY, but at least it doesn't creep. The reach on the smith is also too short, and both have a lot of slack, esp, the smith. Right now I'm liking the HK's better. Is there anything I can do to fix these up myself (done nice trigger jobs on 10/22's and muzzleloaders before)

ALSO the HK is acting up, sometimes the slide locks open after the last round and sometimes i doesn't. Sometimes the slide shuts when I insert a mag and sometimes it doesn't. Unnerving. I thought HK's were dead reliable?

on the HK. when i had my USP9F, i polished the trigger parts and used a 10# mainspring (only had a few light strikes w/ S&B ammo). got the pull down to about 3#, but the creep was still there. the best option is finding a match trigger to install or sending the HK to Teddy Jacobson or Bruce Grey to get a trigger job done.

is the HK new? the mage springs might be weak and be the cause of the slide not locking back.

like a Glock, if you slam a loaded mag into the HK with the slide locked back, it'll chamber a round.

i sold my HK, because i like my Glocks and P99 more...

I've grown to like my USP triggers (I own 4). I have many 1000's of rounds through each of them. The trigger does get better.
As for the slide closing (sometimes) when you insert a mag...it's normal.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to take the mag safety off the S&W, I don't like it anyway. On th HK, I found you just have to slam the mag home pretty hard in order for the slide to shut. The last round hold open still only works randomly. And the mags are very new.

On th slide not staying open, clean the mags & make sure the slide release is clean too. Also, are the mags factory or aftermarket?
