This evening I sat down to load up some 45 Colt. I had a tray of range pick up brass so I ran them through the sizing, decapping die and stood them on end as I went.
I noticed that some were noticeably short.
My Lyman manual calls for a trim to length of 1.275. I had in front of me about 20 pieces of Starline at 1.285 and some Remington at 1.280 and a bunch of Federal at about 1.282. Not a problem, I was going to trim them anyway.
I also had about 25 pieces of very shiny Hornady brass that measured 1.230.
I'm sure someone probably trimmed that Hornady brass that short for a reason but I can't imagine why.
Any ideas?
And just how short is too short for a rimmed cartridge?
