I am going to have my next handgun (probably an HK P2000 or USP Compact) hard chromed by Tripp Research or NP3 plated by Robar.

From what I have read:

  1. Tripp is harder and more scratch resistant
  2. NP3 wont crack as easily as hard chrome
  3. NP3 may scratch easier but the damage is isolated to the area and rust will not get under the plating
  4. Tripp in my opinion looks much nicer, but NP3 is easier to clean and somewhat self lubricating.

The gun will be used for carry and some rather intensive training classes. I dont live near salt water, and dont often carry near it. I do live in a rather humid environment, but I have never had a rust issue with any of my guns due to humidity or perspiration.

what kind of holsters do you use?

either finish will be durable but if you favor kidex holsters I'd probably go with the hard chrome as dirt, dust and grit will invariably accumulate during training sessions and the chrome is hard enough to stand up to most of that stuff.

I use mostly leather holsters, I only have a few kydex but leather is definitely what I use 80% of the time.... of course I started with leather because of issues I heard about regarding holster wear with kydex.

I have zero experience with NP3, but I have owned Tripp hardchromed pistols for over 10 years now.

Hardchrome is easy to clean because it is such a hard & smooth surface, I just wipe with rag after shooting, no need for solvents.

As for hardchrome cracking, I have never heard of this (especially with a Tripp job). Remember that hardchrome is used to harden industrial tool surfaces such as oil rig drill bits, I doubt that HC would be used if it had a tenency to easily crack.

Are you sure it isn't regular chrome you are talking about cracking?

I have read of hard chrome tracking and peeling, but I cant say I have ever heard any first hand info of it. I have never heard anything bad about Tripp though.
