Well I bought a tru-glo red dot optic, but I don't know if I should return it or not. There is no magnification, it doesn't really seem like it gives an advantage over the iron sights that my marlin 336 comes with. Will I appreciate it better when I'm out in the field or should I return it?

Need some more information here.

What were you planning to do with your Marlin 336? Hunt or plink? At what ranges are you wanting to shoot? Less than 100 yds.? More?

You say there is no magnification. Most "red dot" optics don't have any magnification. Did you expect it to have magnification?

I am sure that I won't be the only one that finds the combination of a red dot optic and a lever action gun to be somewhat unusual.

As noted, most red-dots are 1x, meaning there is no magnification in any of them.

Tru-Glo does make a 2x red-dot, but the parallax is so bad in them as to make them unusable for anything.

The advantage is speed.
Instead of having to align two sights and the target, you only have to put the dot on the target and shoot.
They are faster!

Primary function would be hunting whitetail in the Maine woods, so pretty much all of the shots would be under 100 yards.
