Trying G-10 grips on a 1911 for the first time

I’ve seen G-10 grip panels made for a variety of guns for many years, but I haven’t ever tried a set to see what they’re like.

My Kimber Stainless Target II 9mm came with blah looking rubbery grip panels that are an aesthetic fail, so I bought a set of $30 Guuun G-10 panels in grey/black to see how they do.

I chose the factory grip screws as they match the body of the gun nicely over the gloss black ones that came with the grips. Install was as easy as unscrewing the stainless hex screws, adding the O-rings that come with the grips, and installing the screws.



I must say the gun looks a lot better now than when it wore the original grip panels. I also like the cut on the right panel for the thumb to reach the mag release button. I still need to shift my grip a bit to hit it with the thumb of my mid-sized mitts, but it is a tad easier so the grip-shift isn’t as much now as it was with the originals. The grip is good, not as tacky as the rubber panels but comfy enough. I hope to go shoot it on Thursday, I will then see how the gun stays settled in my hands under recoil with these new shoes in place.

I have G-10 grips on a Kimber 5 inch lightweight and a Colt LW Commander. I like the way they look and feel in my hand.

 

I have the exact same grips on my Rock Island FS Tactical and love them. They look good, fit good, and feel good. What more can you ask for!

I have nearly the exact same grips on a SS Fusion, love 'em! Look great also.

 

I've some G-10 factory Colt grips that feel good and look good.

I'm thinking on replacing mine with the same as you took off yours ,and retaining the finger groove.

 

Thanks, my kid put those on. It had checker OE type grips when I first got it.

 

I pretty much exclusively use the Hogue Piranha grips on everything I own if they offer them. I like extra grippy grips and they are that. I don't have wood or rubber grips on anything now.

 

I've been trying very hard to make myself hit the mag release with my left thumb before reaching for a fresh mag. Since I ride the safety with my right thumb, the goal is to not drop my grip. I've also started riding the slide release with my left thumb to get more downward pressure, so I can either slingshot the slide while my left hand is disengaged or hit the slide release when I re-engage my left hand. No clue whatsoever if it makes any difference.

 

I really like the G-10 “golf ball” grips.
Lots of folks have commented they find them too abrasive, but I don’t think so.
The thumb/mag release cut is also nice.

 

I've had G-10 on a Gold Cup for 5 years.

Personally, I wouldn't have anything else.

I have about 3 sets of different grips for that pistol, including the original rubber, and G-10 is the best.

 

Oh no.....New grips,something else for me to obsess about.

 

What I've found with the G10 grips; if they are too aggressive, it doesn't take much work with fine sandpaper to tone it down. There were a couple 'hot spots' on the ones on a K and N frame, and that was the fix.

I like the finger groove insert that I put on mine. Goes under the stock (or custom) grips and so bulks the grip for a better fit in my hand.

Just replaced some VZ g10 grips on my Dan Wesson with some LOK aluminum palm swell grips.

I like my grips aggressive.

 

If VZ brand were the standard for comparison, I'm wondering if other brands using G10 are precisely the same height and width, or if some of those are narrower/ smaller? When the frame shows next to a tiny grip, it's not the same experience!
