"[Air] travelers may not use firearm magazines/clips for packing ammunition unless they completely and securely enclose the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard)."

Anyone know of TSA-approved "pouches" or "holders"?

Incidentally, how in the hell can a lanyard be employed to "secure" rounds in a magazine?

Many thanks!

There is no TSA requirement that pouches, holders, holsters, etc be "TSA approved". They simply want the ammunition to be secured....and if tying a cord (lanyard) around a magazine secures it thats all you need.

Just put the blasted ammo in an original box and load the mags once you get out of the airport.

TSA may require you to do one thing, but a given airline may specify having the ammo cased.

To avoid differences in airline policy just take the more conservative route of boxing your ammunition outside of the magazine.

From the TSA website:

Any ammunition transported must be securely packed in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.

Firearm magazines/clips do not satisfy the packaging requirement unless they provide a complete and secure enclosure of the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard).

Get some canvas, or nylon (they are both made of fiber) magazine pouches that completely encase the magazines. According to the TSA website that is all that is required. I know it doesnt say the pouches need to be fiber, but then you can also say it is securely packed in a fiber package designed to carry small amounts of ammo.
