I watch "Stargate SG-1" on and off. I noticed that the team (at least in recent times) carry FN P90 personal weapons, which fire the 5.7mm cartridge. If you're fighting unpleasant aliens that wear what appears to be some type of armor, wouldn't an M4 carbine or AK-47 be a little more effective?

    What can I say, it's a slow day :D

IIRC, the 5.7x28mm (it IS 28mm, right?) is better at piercing armor than 5.56mm or 7.62x39mm.

Yup, the 5.7 is designed to defeat armor and still do nasties to the meat on the other side. Plus, it is very compact, minimal recoil (esp compared to an AK) and 50 rounds available.

The russian team does carry chopped AKs though, AK-74Us, iirc.

Of course, the old 9mm MP-5s the team had originally didn't have any trouble punching through the alien armor.

They seem to have capable consultants when it comes to weapons handling. They use their tac slings, keep their fingers outside of the trigger guard when not firing, don't sweep each other with their muzzles, and so on.

Love that show, wonder what they use for armor though that the bullet can go through

Well, the jaffa armor is meant to protect against energy weapons, not projectiles, so I can see how the "primitive" P90 would be effective there.

What I wonder is whether the Air Force is as supportive of SG-1 as the Navy was of JAG...

Strange that they use the P90 with the Beretta instead of the Five-SeveN. At least with the MP5s they had ammo compatibility. But the P90 just looks cooler

They used a SAW a few times in Atlantis, along with those nifty rail gun things.

Funny... all that CQB and noone is packing a shotgun? Heck even the Marines in Aliens had a shotgun.

    Guess a Remington 870 is just not as sexy/futuristic/cool/etc. as a P90 :D

    White Horseradish:

Two USAF Chiefs of Staff have had cameo roles as themselves. General Jumper most recently and General Michael Ryan before that. From what I have heard, SG-1 is the only show on TV that has full support of one of the services. IIRC JAG was only allowed to shoot on Navy Bases/Facilities. A somewhat lesser level of support.

DR Rob- the USAS-12 shows up whenever they are fighting replicators (robot bugs).

I think in the first show of the series some jafa guys came through the stargate. The M16's the guards had were ineffective. I think the original movie went off in a similar fashion. I think they made a quick explanation after that of using some sort of armor piercing ammo. If .223 is ineffective, buck shot wouldn't be any better.

There have been a couple of episodes where Teal'c has used a shotgun rather than his staff weapon. Usually when fighting the replicators IIRC.

5.7mm better than .223 at armor piercing? My butt. It's just that the armor piercing capability of 5-7 has been emphasized more, both by FN and CBS.

    Steel-cored 31 gr @ 2350 fps vs. steel-tipped 62 gr @ 3050 fps. You do the math.

You guys must not watch too much SG1. The SPAS-12 and USAS-12 shotguns were used quite extensively against the replicators.

There are also some scenes where the off world teams pack a Barrett 82 semi.

I would love to be a weaons specialist on that show. Even though Dean Anderson (O'Neal) is a rabid anti.

I like the FN P90. It's easy to shoot, maintain and to carry. How it fares against alien armor I'm unsure. I never had to shoot an alien yet alone a person. Hopefully I never have to shoot either. I want the alien alive so I can haul it around the country like P. T. Barnum & Bailey Circus. ;)

I had heard(I thought here at THR) that Anderson had backed way off on his anti-gun schtick?

OK cool... they DO use shotguns.

I haven't watched the show as much as many of you... but if I was going in harm's way with armor plated aliens etc... I'd want something with more bark than a P90... maybe a select fire M-14 with a bipod or an HK 91 or FAL...
but only because finding a servicable BAR might be tough.

Part two of the pilot episode has a USAS-12. It makes occasional showings through the course of the show. It does seem to be the perfered "Replicator Buster."

Carter has been using some sort of stubby AR platform with a Beta C and Elcan. Damn, you couldnt pay me to shoot that gun without earplugs.

Interestingly enough, they rigged up the stubby AR for Carter because at one point they were low on the blanks for the FN P-90s.

I read an account by the actress who plays Carter where she describes fighting back the hordes in a battle scene with that AR, when either the floorplate of the mag came loose, or the mag dropped out of the gun entirely. Rounds spilled everywhere, and Tapping says that it felt like a "Stargate Barbie" moment. :D

I must say SG is my favorite show, I enjoy all the characters, action and stories. The fact that they get their guns and gun safety correct is a big plus in my book.

I wonder why they stick with the Beretta 92 though when most of their long guns are not standard military issue?

Seems like they could throw in a couple 1911's or something.

Is that the show with that scary looking black guy? Other than him, I would probably watch it but he is hard on my eyes.
