Two Handed Katana Machete

I can't help thinking, if you swung that thing hard enough, wouldn't it slip out of your hands?

Probably wouldn't slip out of your hands, but there's just not enough weight forward to make it look like a good chopper.

I expect it has a partial (see the rivets?) rat-tail tang under a plastic grip, so would expect it to have the necessary forward weight.

"How many whacks until the handle falls off?" is a valid question, though.

It's probably a full tang handle, but either way it's not a very good weapon. The blade needs a thick spine to give it weight and balance, but it lacks that and thus is a clumsy and dangerous blade.

Just a suggestion.....

Those who state what it's not good for and how inadequate it must be might want to go to the site and spend 3 minutes watching the video.

:)

For me this clearly looks like a product adressed
to mall ninjas.

Does it have any use .. other than having fantasy battles in your head with it?

putting the word Katana into the name is not right.

A solution to a nonexistent problem imho.

What can it do, that a Latino machete can´t in the jungle?
And hwo does it compare to a Katana?

I seriously wouldnt want to be the guy w3ho brings this thing
to a Katana-Fight :)

This thing is just ridiculous. The blade-length is longer wakizashi, while the handle would be more suitable on a 30" or longer blade (and I've had kenjutsu instructors who would say it's too long for any sword).

Lose 4" of handle, and I might buy one for $30. But it still won't be anything like a katana.

And Chunky should be wearing eye pro in the video. Don't be that guy, kids.

The promotional video shows impressive performance hacking though meat and bone, but watch the other videos of the other machetes and swords and you'll see that better balance and weight gives the same or better performance with less effort on the part of Mr. Thompson. The level of effort needed to go through a rack of beef or pig ribs or the whole pig is less with the better balanced/weighted blades.

Not to say that this thing isn't dangerous, it obviously is, but it isn't the same for ease of use as an inexpensive katana copy from Kris Cutlery or Cas Hanwei or even Cold Steel. At $40 it's value is pretty good, but you could get slightly better performance out of some of their similarly priced machetes.

This weapon strikes me as a bit of a mistake, also. Nothing especially wrong with it - I'd happily bring one to a knife fight. But, given the general shape and design of this, what you're really looking at is a less-functional version of a Chinese two-handed dao:

sedadao.jpg

This design gives you a double-handed grip, a heavier blade with the thickness and weight where the power of the cutting-chopping stroke is, and a pommel to aid in retention. So the Cold Steel item here seems a bit neither-fish-nor-fowl, it isn't a good machete nor sword design.

A "real" Ming or Quing style dao from a modern manufacturer would be much better than that oversized cleaver.

It's a machete. Meaning it's thin, cheap metal, and knowing Cold Steel... it probably has a really good sharp edge on it.

It'll do anything that a machete can do, it just has a goofy blade shape that adds a... kinda-sorta-potentially useful tip for stabbing or thrusting if using it in a fight. Nothing WRONG with that, mind you.

I don't really see why so many of you are trying to compare it to an actual katana though. Of COURSE it's not going to handle, cut, or compare any way remotely close to katanas. It's just a katana-shaped machete. It's more appropriate to just compare it to other machetes.

The problem is that it doesn't perform as well as a machete because of the compromises of trying to make it resemble something like a katana.

Is it deadly? Sure. Is it a good machete, not really.

If you want an inexpensive sword with some similarity to a katana/waki and much better handling than this katachete get one of the Ontario Blackwinds.

LeSigh.
I would throw rocks at you if you gave me one of these and said, "OK, now backpack through Honduras."

It is, however, a new contender for all the threads that start like "I have a glandular problem that makes my BO smell like 3 day old bacon grease and rotting caribou meat. I'll be going to Alaska for the first time and was wondering what I could take to defend myself from Griz and drunk locals, but only have 39.99 and a mason jar of pennies..."

It's interesting in a "yeah I got 40 bucks a and a free weekend..." kind of way.

Ok, I'm done "writing dialog" for "now." :neener:

cartoon ninja sword...

Yes it's an anime' shaped ninjato but I had to... I haven't bought anything bad from Coldsteel yet...I just bought one and received it today... reasonably sharp (in a machete sort of way) Should be plenty of fun doing "pruning" around the yard. I have some experience and training in ken-jutsu and it feels right when executing cuts. Not bad!

**Saw some of the mall ninja comments concerning this item...very entertaining!

Don't forget these when you are playing Beverly Hills Ninja Gardener.
