I started doing some research into acquiring parts for a type 99 Arisaka build while I have some down time waiting for my finish reamer to get here for my current 1893 Spanish Mauser build in progress.

While looking for an extractor I noticed 2 different lengths listed for them. One is listed 4.95" long and the other is listed as being 4.16" long. Both are found on the Numerick site. Since I don't have bolt to compare to my actions I'm clueless. My question is. What is the correct length for them?

I would suspect that the shorter one is for a type 38. But I don't know for sure. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Here is what I have. They are just barreled actions withe mums ground off. One was built at the Kokura arsenal and is a series 22. The other was built at the Nagoya arsenal and is a series 1.

I found what I believe is the answer to my question. The extractor listed by Numerick as being 4.95" long has to be a typo because the overall length of the actions are 4.73" not including the tang so there is no way that it would fit it would be too long. Besides the bolt travel is 4.25". So I have probably answered my own question. The extractor is with high probability is 4.16" long.

I found my answer in my copy of Bolt Action Rifles by Frank de Haas.

Congrats on solving your dilemma. I consider that book as one of the classics on that topic. I picked up my copy years ago and am very glad I did. Best of luck with that Arisaka project.
