I reading this on several websites that the U.N. small arms treaty is due to be signed in the next couple of weeks.

Any truth to this and what do you think will result because of this treaty?

I haven't heard anything specifically about the treaty, but I wouldn't expect anything to change in the US. Even if our representative does sign it, the treaty has to be passed by congress before it can affect us and change our laws. Personally, I don't think that congress would even touch it this close to an election.

The treaty could possibly make a few more hoops for manufacturers (located outside the US) to jump through when exporting weapons, which might make imported guns a tad bit more expensive, but I think that would be an absolute worst case scenario.

I'm pretty sure they're only starting the meetings to begin DRAFTING a treaty in the next few weeks...if that's the case, it'll probably be years before it gets to any signing stage...going to google some things to check for sure,

ETA: They are meeting to begin writing it. However according to Cheaper Than Dirt "July 2 through the 27, 2012, 193 members of the U.N., along with non-government organizations, the NRA, public interest groups, and firearms and other arms industry representatives, along with the media will be attending the Conference. Cheaper Than Dirt will keep you updated as the story progresses."

In addition it has to be ratified by the Senate before it effects the US, however "If the United States signs the treaty, the U.S. Senate will have to approve. However, in July 2011, 58 members of the Senate signed a letter stating their disapproval of the treaty. Further, in the 1957 landmark case Reid v. Covert, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the United States cannot enter into a treaty that violates the Constitution." (Same Source)

So, it seems like it's a non issue. If we sign it at all, it's basically a symbolic act.
