I have just started using an ultrasonic cleaner to clean my guns, and it does a great job of cleaning everything off of my guns. I hate cleaning guns because I have very little free time, and the time I do have would be better used on the range.

My question is – Do I give my guns an oil bath after cleaning them in the ultrasonic cleaner, or do I just lube them up with an oily rag?

Also, any tips or hints would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure I'd make a regular habit of using an ultrasonic cleaner because of the type of solvents they used, not would I give any of my guns an "oil bath" nor use an "oily rag" to "lube" them.

The solvents used in an ultrasound cleaner would/should remove all oils, grease or lube from all parts of the gun. A gun cleaned that way should then be properly oiled in all the right places. Not too much, but not too little.

To do a proper cleaning and oiling the gun would have to be thoroughly disassembled. Done on a regular basis, it would cause excessive wear and tear on the gun.

Done once in a while might be fine, but I think the time saved cleaning might be used up in the reassembly and oiling.

What guns are you cleaning? I have found the heavier dirty greasy stuff in small corners may stick. I should be more liberal with the tooth brush and maybe a stronger de-greaser in the bath.
After a cleaning there is more surface area exposed to the air and the oxygen in the air. I use CorrosionX to film every accessible surface and a Q tip on everything not so easy to reach.

I'm jealous, I wish I had a sonic cleaner... Whenever you remove all lube from any steel you should completely lube it. If that means dunking it go ahead, just wipe em off after. What model and how much did you pay for that cleaner out of curiousity?

I have used an ultrasonic cleaner in the past and it worked very well. I found 10 weight motor oil worked very well as a cleaning fluid when it was heated to 140-150 degrees F. The USC I was using had a heater.Wipe them down and put them in the safe.
