UMC for HD?

Just wanted to get a feeler for how well Remington UMC hollowpoints would work for HD. I like to pick up ammo at least 100 at a time, and the local store has a decent deal on these, only a few bucks more than FMJ's. They shoot well in my xd40, haven't had any ftf's or fte's. I would like to pick up some Hydrashocks but they aren't very available and pricey for me until payday.

Another quick question: CCI shotshells, worth a buck a piece? And are they mostly for varmits/rabid dogs?

I often use those for practice and they are both reliable and consistent from an accuracy point of view. I don't carry them them in my XD-40, but I imagine they would probably be fine.

I would use them for practice and keep your mags stuffed with Remington Golden Sabres for HD. It's just an opinion, but I like the Golden Sabres and like to practice with the UMC....

Most people will scoff at using budget/practice ammo for HD, but if it shoots, it can kill. The biggest problem is the quality control and if one fails to feed or eject. But by and large its a comfort level. Stuff like Winchester white box has never been a problem in either of those two categories for me, and I have shot a lot of it, so I feel completely comfortable with it.

Some folks buy them for snakes, I think they're a joke. Definitely would not kill a dog from farther than five feet.

i doubt you will fire alot of HD ammo in your home, i pack my extra glock mags with black talon, i had 2 boxes, but i tested 10, worked great, that or if money is a big issue try some rangers, those worked good for me too....

i wouldnt advise umc hp's for defence....at least in a 9mm......
but the fmj are accurate..

umc 9mm jhp have alot of flash, and dont usually expand if they hit smething hard before they hit something soft...
Ive put about 1k UMC thru testing for SD/HD, and I should have quit at 500...

remington does great for rifle cal ammo, especially the UMC line.... but if you want effective SD/HD ammo, all my tests have me packing Winchester STHP or SXT loads for handgun..

UMC is dirty as hell, at least for me when I buy them in .45 FMJ's
The amount of deposits of carbon/lead on my gun after I shoot 100 is pretty intense

I am a fan of the whitebox Winchesters, I keep a box or so around for the range, they hit where I aim and work well without much fouling. Then again, fouling isn't a concern really since I clean my gun after each trip to the range (100-150 rounds usually.) I will looking into the Gold Sabres and the Rangers or SXT, basically something hollowpoint. The reason I am concerned with Remington shells is I have had serious issues with their 22 shells failing to fire, even when the rim is dented, several boxes has had this issue...I try not to compare apples and oranges however.

May not be as good as the premium ammo but I've never had one rd in any caliber that didn't fire. Maybe the lots I've shot were different but I've never noticed the newer green box UMC ammo in either 9MM or .45ACP being particularly dirty. It's a bit cheaper and more available in my area than the Win white box.
