Re: Onward Allusion,

As long as you are 18, you can still own one... You just gotta find em. There's a billion posts on here about the legality of this.

OP: Try ads on here, armslist, and gunshows. But be wary of sellers, make sure they are legit, and have proof that they bought it themselves. I got a Glock when I was 18, took months to find it. And getting ammo was hard as well.

I think it's a toss up between a mossberg and an 870, the edge going to the mossberg for lefties.

I like the trigger guard mounted safety of the 870 (behind the trigger) over the Winchester's position in front of the trigger. I could envision the trigger finger ending up on the trigger when switching it off safe.

There's a lot of preference one way or the other, but you'll need to decide--if you say you like the mossy, that's not a bad choice.

I'm not a lawyer!

OP is in California. A parent must "transfer" a handgun to him. He personally cannot go out and do a FTF at 18. He also mentioned his parents are ANTI's.

I just bought a semi-auto shotgun for $319 at Wally World. Now before everyone dumps all over it, I bought it as a knock around duck gun. It's a NEF/H&R shotgun. It has all synthetic furniture, it's light weight and it's pointability is excellent. It just handles so well. I would recommend it to anyone. The link is below.

I have a Mossberg 500 for home defense, but I would have been just as happy picking up a Remington 870. Do check out the safety issue on the Remington if you can't find a left hand version.

^^^ Thought I'd post that since you seem to be taking a vote.

I have both the mossberg 500 and remington 870 and both with 18" barrels. They are both fantastic shotguns and you can't go wrong if you buy either. I prefer the mossberg myself because of the safety location and the finish on the gun. Get which ever gun you feel comfortable shouldering and feels good in your hands, then go out and shoot the hell out of it. Shoot it often and have fun.
