Do any of you Lads build underhammers? I have made several, mostly because I could not find really good, small side-locks, and could not afford Bob Roller,s works of art. So far, I have only made pistols, but I would love to put together a Billinghurst-style buggy-rifle.

I haven't built one yet. But I've got a Hopkins and Allen clone made by Numerich that got treated to a new set of wood by some previous owner. It's a great shooter and it's different. So a win-win on multiple counts.

Somewhere along the way I want to use my shops to make up my own underhammer. Quite likely from my own shop made action. Just not sure which style it'll be. I've got about 187 other projects to do first. :D

I have a Deer Creek action in the white that is on my list. I'd like to get a colerain half octagonal half round barrel... but I need to find someone with a stock duplicator machine who won't rob me first.

I have a Numrich "heritage" in 45 that is my primary BP deer rifle, despite having several other sidelocks. Following the prices on gunbroker, I am tempted to sell it to finance the new project.. but I'm stalling since I like it too much.

OP, post some pics of your completed projects!

I have a .58 caliber Green Mountain barrel just looking for a project...., can't remember why I bought it  Of course if you folks remember how long it's been since one could find a 42" .58 caliber Green Mountain barrel, you'll know the barrel is vintage.

I'm thinking on making an under-hammer, and then sending it to my brother out West, for Elk. He's left handed and his boys are all right handers and I was going to make a stock along the lines of a lever action rifle without a cheek rest. That way they all could shoot it.

I can't believe what those $60 Numrichs go for now. I have had a few.
A friend, back around 1980 got a hold of an original Billinghurst complete with false muzzle, patch cutter, both moulds and swage in the original chest. I could have had it for $500, which was a fortune for me. Should have gotten a loan.

Underhammer long guns suffer from too shorta ram rods. When ram rod pipes are on the bottom flat, the length of the rod is limited by the nipple (or frizzen, :D). The solution derives from thinking outside the box. Place the pipes one flat over, on either side of the bottom flat, allowing the rod to go past the obstruction. I've done this and recommend it. Gives the rifle that "six-gun" look, where the ejection rod tube is off to the side. Put pipes on both sides and carry a spare rod, if desired.

Kindest Regards,
Doak

I've thought of that also. I have another UH action that I plan on building into a hunting rifle and I am going to move the ram rod over one flat so I can use a longer ram rod.

My aluminum ramrod with a patch jag sticks out about an inch in front of the muzzle of my H&A due to this very issue.

I don't believe it affects my shooting/harvesting success (or lack thereof).

It does make a mess of the black anodize out there.

My TC Renegade hickory RR came too short for real cleaning as well. I delt with it in the same manner and the aluminum RR sticks out in front of the muzzle about an 3/4" with a jag on it when I take it hunting.

SC45-70, love your flinter! Mike OTDP, I made one for a lady in that style back in the 1980's what kind of groups can you get off a bench, rested, at 25 yards?
