A friend of mine received a under lever shotgun from his uncles estate. Maybe somone here could identify it from his lousy pictures.

I haven had a chance to see it in person yet but if its needed I'll get better photos

Well?

It says something on it.
I can see it in the last photo.

What does it say??

That would at least give everyone a place to start thinking about it!

Personally, my crystal ball is in the shop getting a detail & wax job.

The marking on the rib is hard to make out, but it looks like "Diebner"; the was a Artern G. Diebner making guns in Sachsen, Germany, during the 1850s, according to "Heer Der Neue Stockel". The style of the trigger-guard is definitely German, but clearer, close-up photos would definitely help.

That gun appears to be a center fire cartridge gun, so it couldn't date to 1850. Of course, a gun maker is often in business for many years, and often families carry on the business for, sometimes, centuries (e.g., Beretta).

I agree that it is German, or perhaps Austrian.
