Just bought a 12X unertl off of GunBroker for my Krag. Not in pristine condition but it's usable. The only thing is that it doesn't come with a recoil spring. Would like to find one but everywhere I look I can't find one. Was wondering if anyone would know where to find one or if it is even necessary? Any help would be appreciated because this is my first unertl. Thanks.

Definitely necessary. The scope body will move forwards under recoil as it "free floats" within the mounts. The spring returns it to its original position. The spring itself is nothing special- you might be able to locate a suitable substitute at the local hardware store or Lowes- but you will still need a tension adjustment collar. A competent machine shop could probably fabricate one for a reasonable sum if one cannot be sourced through Lux or Ebay.

Good luck!

Definitely necessary.

Well, that depends. Apparently, the Marine snipers during WWII took the springs off. I'm not positive, but suspect they were a liability in the field, getting tangled up in brush etc.

Fast forward to today and CMP Vintage Sniper competitions, those who shoot period correct 1941\03-A1 rifles with 6 or 8x Unertl's or Malcolm repops can't have the springs on the scopes. The shooter must manually pull the scope back after every shot, and give it a little twist. Forget that and you have a wild shot. Having shot those rifles it's definitely a pain, and easy to forget to do in the heat of competition.

Well, that sounds like a ridiculous rule.

As for removing the spring in combat.....I suppose you could use the clamps to fix it in position, but I dont see how that wouldnt mess with your zero too.

for benchrest shooting, the spring is pulled back a bit and the set screw tightened. the scope will move forward (actually, the rifle moves rearward and the scope doesn't) at the shot and must be pulled back before the next shot. it's an accuracy thing. but you should have the spring set correctly for all other shooting. and, yes, i forget to reset the scope and wonder why my shot wanders out of the group.

luck,

murf

I assume you have checked with Dewy Greiner http://unertl.alexweb.net/for_sale.htm Brief thread on snipershide https://www.snipershide.com/shooting/threads/unertl-spring.4206/ I don't recall ever messing with the spring on the Unertl mounted on my M-37, but that was just used for smallbore position shooting. Steve Earl doesn't show springs, but may have the specs you can use to acquire a substitute. Good luck.
When I tried the email on dewy’a site, it says that it’s an invalid email so I’m not sure what to try. Says he’s got a full recoil spring assembly for sale
