So, I’m going to do another build this year. Likely a Savage or Remington action with a Criterion Barrel. I’m toying the idea of doing this in a wildcat cartridge that isn’t so obscure I need to get custom everything to reload it, but odd enough that everyone and their brother doesn’t reload for it. I’d like it to be a great coyote gun/long range target/deer/ground hog gun. I’m thinking possibly in the 6mm area. I tossed around the 6mm Remington AI or 243 Win AI. Throw some ideas around, I’d love to hear of some new “hot” up and coming cartridges that people may be playing with.

I follow the vortex nation podcast and they developed a 6.5mm cartridge based of the 300RUM. It’s completely custom developed and seems to have a lot of potential but again, getting brass, dies and a reamer are the issue. So let’s try and stay within reason.

thanks

6ARC, it's a variation of a 6.5 Grendel but it may become pretty popular. Not exactly a wildcat.

There's 6x45... 5.56x45 necked up to 6mm. Both it and 6ARC are pretty neat mini action cartridges.

You could always run a fast twist 243 Ackley Improved. Or 6mm Remington Ackley Improved.

Nothings really new under the sun.

223-08 is pretty uncommon, but will eat barrels. 25-08, a little less so.

The latest one I've been playing with is the 6mm SLR:

http://6mmar.com/Super_LR.html

Conceptually, the 6mm Super LR is like a long bodied 6XC (case body about .120" longer). The Super LR has a long neck (.321" vs. the .263" long neck of the parent .243 Winchester case). The Super LR also has a 30 degree shoulder angle vs. the 20 degree shoulder angle of the .243 Winchester parent case. The Super LR has a case capacity of approximately 54 gr. of water weight vs. 49 gr. of water capacity of a 6XC and 55 gr. of water capacity for the .243 Winchester.

Don't know IF I'd call it "up and coming", but I do like it as an alternative to .243 and it does pretty much live up to it's billing. Easily formed from .243Win brass, and was easy to develop a load for. With H4831 SC I get 3170 with a 105 Hybrid out of my 26" Bartlein barrel.

@CRM284

I’m considering the same project for 2021. A long distance 6mm that’s not too benchrest in its form. Would like to use it for some varmints as well.

I’ve never been much for chassis’ but if I could find a great hunter type chassis with a foldable stock I think I could learn to appreciate its function over form.

Be following this thread.

I hear there's a new round gaining popularity they call it the 44 fairweather, even fits in the ar-15. Lol sorry I had to.

there's so many rounds I'd try, it makes choosing hard so what action I had and it's use would narrow they down some.
.44 fairweather with ftx on a ground hog would be spectacular I think lol

Yeah I bet, do they make a 180 ftx?. 2500fps I don't think would be hard to get with a 180. I did mess around with some power belts shot from my 45-70 think they were 160he that they don't make any more. It was amazing how well they shot, don't know the speed I just used 15gr trail boss. Shot one thru a 4" x4" about a foot long and it was very impressive. Pulled the tips off some and they were opening in the air, made for a cool lol pop.

I'm in the same ballpark for a project and have decided on the 6x47 Lapua. Wildcat in that not everyone in deer camp has one, yet is common enough with competiton shooters that brass is readily available and can be fire formed from 6.5x47 Lapua. The bonus is that it has a reputation for exceptional accuracy, especially with a 1:8 or faster twist rate.

Me? I'm going for a 1:7.5 twist in my 6x47 Lapua E.R. Shaw 24" barrel for my old Remington 788. ;)

180 sierra and xtp, 225 ftx. Betting 22-2300 would still be quite a hoot ;)

I've been thinking of the 25SST in a Brux barrel to go with MDT ESS Chassis/Pierce Action sitting in the gun vise.
but that's simply a want currently lol...they have the dies and brass to go with the reamer
BlackJack 131 Ace bullets
not sure it will do anything better than the current 6mm I'm playing with other than being a new to me caliber
