Update on my 14-year old daughter and her introduction to guns

I had posted a couple/few weeks ago about me taking the CCW course and asking how to introduce a 14-year old to a gun (now guns), in the home.

It was strongly recommended by most that she should receive professional training in gun safety, handling, and shooting. This past Saturday she completed the NRA 1st Steps Pistol class, and LOVED shooting! She paid careful attention to the instruction, and was great on the range. She mostly shot an instructor's Sig Sauer Mosquito .22, but I did have her fire a magazine through my 9mm. She was not able to make target at 7yds, but she still emptied the mag like a trooper. With the .22 she was popping holes in the paper plates like nobody's business! :)

She now understands the danger and deadliness of a gun, and has much respect for it. She wants me to buy a .22 so we can do Women on Target matches together, and join the local Ladies League. :uhoh:

I also took my CCW course, and it went just fine. I should have my permit within the next 60ish days.

This is her shooting on Saturday. Thanks for all the great advice. :)

That's awesome. Congrats! :)

It is a pretty good idea, too. A 22 is a great way to get trigger time, learn trigger discipline and work on your sighting. Everyone should own a decent 22.
 
Great job! Our kids will be the deciding factor of gun ownership in the future. Keep her going a .22lr handgun is never a bad thing to have around.
 
Way to go . Great to have a new shooter in a family . Now you get to see how long it takes for her to out shoot you and Have to buy her more firearms.
 
Thanks guys! I was proud of her. Initially she didn't want anything to do with guns, no way, no how. :cuss:

Now I can't get her off my back to buy the Sig Mosquito with the pink frame. :D

The great thing is she wants to shoot, shoot, shoot....so I'll be able to get her learning and sharpening her skills, which will be very good for her, in many different ways. :)
 
Glad she likes it! All the practice she gets now might very well save her life down the road.

Please follow up with the lady's league idea. Fun compition is what keeps their interest up...maybe the next womans champ you know.:)

I was going to suggest another brand .22 than the Sig, but if the Sig is what she wants, get her the Sig. I still have my original first gun and first .22 (Marlin 80) It is so old it doesn't even have a Serial Number, but still shoots just fine,

60 years from now that Sig will be worth more than you paid for it, and she will have had 60 years of fun!

Hey! I get to buy my cc gun first. Her gun can wait! :p

She wants the Sig because of the pink frame it has, (14 year old girl were talkin' here). You can see it in the picture. But at $300, she can start saving her money. Because after my cc gun, I r-e-a-l-l-y want a 1911 A1 .45. :uhoh:

Ok, I understand...Not a problem....I just thought you already had yours...:)

Just bought my wife another High Standard. Olympic.:what: Now she has a Trophy (22lr only) and an Olympic (.22 shrot only). That Olympic is a fun gun but probably out of your daughters price range. Talk about easy to shoot...but then it is not pink...Oh Well.

Congrats on your CCW - and on bringing your daughter into the sport!! Welcome to you both!

You can never go wrong w/ a good .22lr. Everyone needs at least one. I don't want to start a brand war here, but I would encourage you / her to take a look at the Browning and Ruger offerings before dropping the cash on the Sig. You'll find folks who will swear by each and say everything else is trash. But, one of them might fit you / her better. I know they don't come in pink, but if you Google, "ruger mark III pink," you'll see some guy on the XD forums did a Hello Kitty Ruger for his wife.

In 2010, I bought my 16 year old daughter an M&P 9c for Christmas (she wants to be a homicide detective someday) along with a gun belt and a BladeTech Sting Ray holster plus some private lessons. She has now taken the NRA Basic Pistol course (taught by the same guy that gave her private lessons) and we go to the range often. I keep the gun secure (plus it's my CCW weapon too ;)) but she has to clean it after each time we shoot.

Two weeks ago, I took my 13 year old daughter shooting for the first time and she loved it. I gave her the safety rules and taught her a few basics and kept complete control of the situation but she was great and I was very proud of her. She shot my daughters M&P 9c with the small grip and hit the bullseye from 5 yards in her first two shots. She did well after that too. But the minute I moved the target to 10 yards she could hit a thing. :rolleyes: She will be taking some private lessons very soon too.

It's fantastic getting the girls involved.
 
Congrats! I can't wait til my daughter is old enough to shoot with me.
The wife keeps insisting she has to be able to walk first :rolleyes:
 
Let her know that WE ALL welcome her to the Fraternity.. I would much rather see them involved in the shooting sports than just about anything else...

My dad was a 2600 Bullseye shooter, it was his involvement in that, and his bringing me to the range that got me started, at the ripe old age of 6 I fired my 1st NRA sanctioned match.. it's been all downhill from there..

It is what introduced me to the FA training staff at the Police Range, which ultimately led me to a pension check after 27 years with the department..

Hey, I finally figured it out.. It's ALL DAD'S FAULT !!!!! (kidding, I love my Dad... he was my very best friend..

You have been given a rare gift, you have something that you and a 14 year old like doing TOGETHER. If I were you I'd plan on getting that family .22 first, waiting a few months for an adult is nothing, but to a 14 year old it's a lifetime. I suggest you both go to a Ladies League event to see what the match is all about and to get some advise from the participants on a suitable pistol. Then look for something that can fit both your hands. There are a number of high quality .22s, new and used, out there that are not too expensive.

When my boys were young I was able to find a couple of things we enjoyed doing together that made their teenage years a lot easier, for them and me.

I can say from my own history that I used to scoff at handguns (Got my first rifle at 12) until I bought one to see what the fuss was about. . . and LOVED shooting the thing at the range. Handgun marksmanship is now more interesting to me than rifle. Glad to hear she enjoys it!
