I need to change my street address on my VA permit. The last couple gun shows wouldn't take it as ID since it still has my old address.

I just moved from Fairfax County to Fauquier County.....I called Fauquier Co Sheriff's office and asked them, they directed me to the county court. County court said they would NOT issue me a new permit. That I need to go back to Fairfax Court and file an affadavid of change of address. After talking to 9 different people at FFX, I fould out who to go see about doing it. It costs $10 and takes only the amount of time to drive to the courthouse. Once I file the affadavid, they forward it to the state police who will then change the address in their records.
Problem with all this is, NO ONE will issue me a new permit reflecting the new address until my current one expires. They will just update "their" records to show the new address.
Does this sound like a potential setup to anyone else? I can just imagine it now, getting pulled over or something by the cops, "yes officer, I have a CHP, just don't compare the address on my license to the permit"
"Sorry son, this permit isn't valid without a matching photo ID"
......cuffed and dragged away at gunpoint.......
"But I filed an affadavid"
"Yea, bubba has your affadvid waiting for you in lockup...."

I looked at the State Police website (http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_ResidentConcealed.shtm) and they didn't have anything. I would talk to your local police (I got mine at the Augusta County Sherriff) and see if they have a change of address process.

Same county or city or a different county or city? In any case, I'd contact the local Circuit Court and ask. I'd do it soon, too.
"Virginia Resident Concealed Handgun Permits are issued by the circuit court of the county or city in which the applicant resides. Please contact the applicable court for specific instruction on the application process."
Change of address for non-resident permit holders is handled by the State Police, but I believe you need to be talking to your local Circuit Court.

Hi guys,
It was a lot easier for me. The local clerk of the court for the Circuit Court took care of the whole thing for me. I had to come back in a couple of days to exchange the permits.
My suggestion is to call your clerk of the court.

It's going to cost you another trip back to the Fairfax County Circuit Cort Clerk's office. Get a testee copy (with the official embossed stamp and all the other bells & whistles) of your affidavit of change of address and carry it with your CHP.
You may still run into problems using your CHP as secondary ID with FFLs, and also as the means to purchase more than one handgun every 30 days. It all depends on how legally savvy the FFL is, and how much time they want to spend explaining THAT transaction to BATFE.
Cops may give you a problem, but a supervisor should be able to straighten things out.
Be sure to let VCDL www.vcdl.org know of any problems you encounter once you have all your paperwork together.

This is a round-about way to deal with this, but...in the letter that came with my permit in Stafford, in bold print it says; "There is no provision in the code for re-issung a Permit when you have a change of address".
However, later in the latter a "lost or destroyed" will be replaced for a $10 fee. It seems that if you report your change of address to the proper authorities and, after a reasonable period of time, report the permit destroyed, it follows that the new re-issued permit should have your new address.
Fairfax is a different animal than the rest of the state though. Good luck.

But if you go back to the Circuit Court that issued your CHP saying yours was destroyed/lost, all you will get is a second edition of the original CHP - no change of address.
This is not a situation that needs clerver work-arounds. It is a straight-forward process of accumulating documentation that shows you have notified the issuing Clerk of your change of address, and that the Clerk has forwarded same to the State Police for their computerized records. You need a hard copy of that documentation to carry on your body along with your CHP and photo ID in case you ever need to present proof of permission to CCW in the Commonwealth of Virginia. No odds being given on how you will do in states with reciprocity, but it should work out OK in the end.

I just moved from Richmond to Chesterfield County. I changed my drivers license but have not changed my permit (don't really plan to either). I was pulled over about 2 weeks ago and gave the officer my license and my permit. There wasn't any problem - plus he gave me a warning instead of a ticket.

So here's my final story. Went the first time to fill out "affadefit change of address" paid nothing. They called me and told me I had to come back and pay.
Went back like 2 weeks later. Filled out a request for duplicate permit. Listed my new address under "current address" and reason for duplicate request I stated as "I recently moved to Fauquier County" paid my $10 and left.
Two days later they call me and tell me my new permit is ready to pick up. I go and get it and it has my new address on it.

I'm facing a similar situation...and the annoying hassle of being required to drive from Staunton to Arlington and back (3 hours each way) just to have this damn address changed because I've been told (will have to verify) that Arlington won't do this via mail.

Nowhere in the Virginia Code does it say that the holder of a concealed handgun permit has any obligation to file change-of-address notices, or obtain replacement permits when changing address.

The address on my Resident Concealed Handgun Permit is no longer correct. Is my permit still valid?
Yes. Virginia Code Section 18.2-308, which governs the issuance of resident concealed handgun permits, makes no provisions for changes of address. A permit once issued remains valid until the expiration date is met, or upon suspension or revocation, regardless of the change of address.
