Uppers Storage

Once you reach the point of building uppers only, instead of complete ARs, what's your method of storing them? They seem to get in the way inside the safe. Do you use separate cases with foam sheets? Ideas?

Thanks

I've toyed with the idea of using PVC tubes, but storing them with scopes in place, etc, made that difficult. Recently, I purchased another locking tool cabinet/workbench ($360 or so at Harbor Freight) and have several stored in the long drawer across the top, just laying on the drawer liner. But it's not a great solution and I don't know what would work better.

I left a couple of uppers in my safe and before I knew it, they were attached to new lowers. I swear them things breed faster than rabbits if you don't keep every single part separated from each other AND under lock and key.

NEVER STORE SPARE UPPERS OR SPARE PARTS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO EACH OTHER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I will admit I do suffer from BRD

I actually have two ARs that are broken down in the safe, uppers on the wide top shelf stored side to side, and lowers on a narrow shelf lower down stored front to back.

Bulldog used to make a case for broken down ARs, works great, but discontinued, Midway Makes a similar one, works well. Store two uppers instead of whole AR.

I have one of those Bulldog cases that I use to use for my 9mm AR pistol. It also works great for my Kel-Tec CMR30 carbine too.

I will say that uppers without scopes are easier to store inside a safe.

I have a couple of uppers leaning against the wall at the back of my safe. Someday they may get paired up with lowers of their own.

Stay safe.

IKR! I'm trying to lock 'em up to avoid unauthorized breeding...

Will probably go this route. A soft case wouldn't take much room in the safe and you can store a couple, or perhaps 3 Uppers.

That's what I'm doing now. It really isn't a big deal, but a scoped upper tends to be in the wrong place when moving rifles around.

Thanks all for the suggestions!

I have dispensed all of my spares to friends and family for fair prices, but I did have a rack built for them. Kinda like a broom/tool organizer it had little fingers that came out and hooked to the side. Put that through attachment hole, and put a pin through the end of the finger to secure it. That did not manage to make the move to the new house so far as I can tell.

I don’t have extra uppers, but do have extra fixed choke shotgun barrels, so a similar problem. I just made a plywood panel with pegs at the right height to sit them upright in the cabinet. They work for my one upper too when I have the AR broken down for cleaning or other work.

I stocked up on spare lowers long ago so don’t have any spare uppers. My safe is over flowing and a second safe would just mean two soon overflowing. So I bought a Stack-On cabinet just for a few cheaper long guns and uppers (sans scopes) that that are not often used. Complete lowers go on safe shelves with stock removed. Hopefully meth heads will loot the Stack-On and rush out for their fix.

Cut up gun socks for separated components and full length on rifles jammed into the safe.

I don't see building "uppers only" as some inevitable progression. AR lowers are pretty cheap (heck I think I have 6 unbuilt lowers just sitting in the safe). Every upper I've built inevitably gets its own lower too. If I were storing just uppers though I'd probably just put them in the gun safe with everything else.

I have a couple lonely uppers that will probably never have lowers because they're .22lr "trainers" that coppy 5.56 uppers.

My safe has a top shelf and I keep the uppers therel laying flat with bolt keepers I've printed on a 3d printer. There's enough room for a couple more up there if it comes to it. I also have my 870 slug barrel up there.

This gizmo will keep your BCG in that spare upper...

For storage... I put the upper into a VCI bag, with a VCI bore tube. A DRY place is a good idea since plastic can trap moisture.

As for the container... I use something like these. Plenty of room for a quite a few scoped uppers, fill the gaps with mags or barrels / parts.

I throw a few Desiccant bags in as well to help absorb moisture. Bulk purchase source.
