Use it, or put it back

I ordered this Benchmade Barrage as a Christmas present for myself and it came in yesterday. Normally I buy knives to use and this was no exception. But when it came in I see this etched on the blade. "First Production 596 of 1000".

Unless someone can come up with a compelling reason I'm putting it in my pocket and using it. But wondering if I might regret that choice down the road. Any thoughts.

It’s made to be used, not accumulated.

Ignore those numbers.

You won’t be able to take it with you where your going whether it’s used hard or brand new looking.

I’m sure you will leave enough to your family when you go that this one knife won’t mean a significant difference.

You bought it so please enjoy it.

Nice knife. Personally I would put it back and get another. I doubt you will get another from the first production run.

Can you have too many knives?

Save this one and get another to use.

In a way I do already have too many. I certainly won't have to leave my pocket empty if I put this back. In fact I have the basic version of this knife already. The basic knife has black plastic handles and 154 CM steel instead of the G10 handles and S30V steel on the new one.

Perhaps it will be collectable one day and you can make some money from it. Other than that, I can't think of any good reason not to use it.

I'd use it. Really like my barrage, the basic one. But I use everything. Dressed last year's deer with my Model 3 Randall as just one example.

Not sure I would want to afford to buy two. If it was my Christmas present than might be hard to budget another. I can certainly see the viewpoint both ways.

The way I'm thinking right now is that most of my stuff will end up with grand kids sooner rather than later. At almost 63 I'm realistic enough to know I have many more days behind me than ahead of me. Selling at a profit just isn't anything I'm interested in and I'd think that one of the grandkids would rather have something I actually used rather than stuck in a drawer.

My sentiments exactly. At 72 they keep telling me, " you die we will kill you!"

It's neat that it's from the first production run, but I'd use it. I see Benchmade knives as users. That being said, buying another for hard use and keeping this one nice isn't a bad option either.

Put in the box and hide it. 1-20 years from now a loved one or you depending on age will find it. And could be worth something. Be a shame if 20 years from now it would be worth $1000. And its beat to heck. Or 20 years from now could be same as you paid. Could always leave as a keepsake for a loved and one.

And sell it at a garage sale for $5. lol

All these limited editions ain't so limited. If you bought it to use, use it.

You will probably pass before it would accumulate enough value to surpass inflation.
Meh you take ya chances with that. Ive got a few things squirreled away for my baby's. Keepsakes and what not. Maybe they will increase in value. Some might not. I am banking on the silver going up in their future. Idk they shall see.

We're not still boycotting Benchmade for cutting up firearms?

That's simply not an issue. A judge ordered the guns ( confiscated from criminals) destroyed by the Sheriff's Dept. That happens all the time in every state. Each county has their own procedures for doing so. Benchmade volunteered to use their equipment to assist the Sheriff's Dept since they didn't have a good way to do it. Good on Benchmade for assisting local LE do their job. That whole issue was taken out of context when it happened.

If we were talking about legally owned guns confiscated by LE I would feel differently.

If it was 1 of 1000, or maybe 7 of 10 or maybe even 20 of 50, then it might make sense to try to sell it to a collector and buy a non-limited edition or one that has less collector value. 596 of 1000? Use it.

I've made my decision, the knife is in my pocket as I type this. Thanks for the input. I'm not knowledgeable about knife collecting and didn't realize the knife was a 1st production run until it came in and I opened the box. My 1st instinct was to just use it, but thought it would be a good idea to ask before I made an expensive mistake.

I bought it from these guys and will give them a plug. Good folks to deal with. Anyone near, or passing through Chattanooga might want to look in their small showroom. I live about an hour away and pass right by the store often and did stop once. But I can order from them and have them deliver cheaper than buying in the store since they ship free. I avoid high TN sales tax since I live in GA too.

I sent them an e-mail asking basically the same question and their reply was to use it.

Yeah go ahead and use it. That way the other 999 knives will be worth even more when the time comes.

In a Cabelas sales flyer that I just received in the mail, I learned of some of the prices that Benchmade-brand knives command in the marketplace. :what:
Not sure how much shopping or looking you've done in the knife market, but on the spectrum of price, Benchmade are actually fairly inexpensive knives. They are excellent quality and present a great value in terms of useable and utilitarian knives, but when compared to some of the higher end companies and models, they are very reasonably priced.

Of course there are points of diminishing return that everyone has to figure out for themselves. For me, that number falls in the $300 and below category.
