Used .22lr options.

I messed up and started looking through my local classified ad web page in the firearm section "Just To Look". I have found what seem to be iod deals on three different guns and wanted input from people who may have owned or shot them. The only one I have experience with is the J.C. Higgins. Here are the ads:


J.C. Higgins Model 103.18-22 cal. single shot bolt action rifle, wooden stock. nice little gun. would make great first gun for youth or a great plinker! Price $65.00


Savage Mark II .22LR Rifle. Bolt action, 10 round mag. comes with sling and weaver scope mounts. very nice little .22! Like new condition. Price $125.00


The third (which I can't seem to find now) was a Marlin Model 60 semi auto for $100 with a fiberglass thumbhole stock (ATI I think), original stock included, a tasco scope and a soft case.

Are these good deals assuming functioning decent condition guns? They seem good to me possibly with room to bargain down slightly as none stated 'firm'. Which would you choose over the others? Do I really need another almost identical single shot bolt action .22 (the Higgins)? Are these good enough that I could turn an easy (even if small) profit on any of them in order to settle down the wife when she finds out I bought 'More guns we don't need and shouldnt be spending money on right now'? Don't get me wrong I love my wife and she is supportive of my shooting lifestyle as long as its within reason.

Any input on these would be great! Thanks in advance!

Marlin Model 60. It's an autoloader standby.

You might be able to get an additional 25.00 out of the MKII.
I don't have any knowledge on the other two.

Well the Marlin sold out from under me before I could jump on it but I'll keep my eye out for one in the future. Any input on the other two, specifically the savage?

Another option to be aware of is the Model 74 Winchester. Made from 1939 up to 1955, its everything a Ruger 10/22 isn't. $350ish for a 13+ round autoloader. Extremely simply to strip & clean gun. Action doesn't lock open though.

Mark II all day. I love mine. However, I might pass if it didnt have an Accu-trigger.

I've had a Glennfield (Marlin) Mod 60 since it was new in '81. It has the longer 22" barrel. The barrel has a heavier profile than most newer .22's. This gun is a squirrel assassin. It is a great hunting rifle; light, accurate, etc. <$150. You can find them near $100.

New Marlins have hit or mis quality control. I had a 795, but it had a canted receiver dove tail. Otherwise the 795 is a great gun. $125 at most stores.

Awesome thanks for the input, I'm talking with the sellers. Found another Mod 60 and got it down to $90 possibly, and the others are available as well, just need to work some price magic. Thanks for the input and by all means I look forward to more.

This sounds like a neat "project"/fun to rebuild type gun. I'll bet you can get it for $50... and I've blown that much for two at the movies.

Eh, dime a dozen. Unless the stock or scope really speaks to you, this would be my last choice.
