• Possible Downtime Alert

I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.

When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

More information is available in this thread.

As always, thanks so much for your patience.

Yesterday I went to my lgs to check out some shotguns, as I was thinking about buying a new auto sometime in the next year. Then I went to the used rack. Found this used rem 1187, made in 2008, in very good condition. Couple dings on the barrel, and very light corrosion under the rib in some spots. For $495, I couldn't resist, especially with the turkey choke on the shelf next to it. Shot it a couple times today to make sure everything works, and it appears to. I'm going to get it dipped in mossy oak greenleaf once turkey season ends here may 31st. Was this as a good a deal as I thought? Also how should I remove that corrosion, or should I let someone else do it when I send it off to get dipped?

If I were shopping for a new gun I'd look at other options. But at that price I'd have jumped on it and I don't need another shotgun. That's about $800-$900 less than a new Benelli or Beretta. I like those better, but not $900 better. They are a little heavy and might need to be cleaned a little more often than some to keep it running, but they are solid guns. I had one of the 26" Special Purpose guns with parkerized metal and a matte finished walnut stock.

You can see part of it. Killed my 1st goose with it. Man, that was a long time ago. At least 30 years ago. img002.jpg

I’ve got one just like yours. It’s become my all purpose shotgun, I’ve hunted with it but more often shoot various clay target sports with it, so it’s handled every type of shells. It’s all but taken the place of my old 870 that hardly gets taken out any more.

The only issue I ever had was the gas oring went bad and it had issues (quit) cycling. A replacent oring was cheap and easy and the gun was back up and running. I bought the gun used so have no idea how old or how many rounds it’s had through it, doesn’t look like many. Now I keep several replacement orings on hand in case it happens again.

Good score on a good usable gun.

I'll ask my turkey hunting friend if he feels his shotgun should be painted camouflage. I know he will wear a mask so his eyes don't gleam.

After shooting some, it cycles heavy turkey loads no problem, but doesn't seem to like light target loads. I deep cleaned it, and put a new o ring on it last night and will try again today. Is that a common problem with these guns is not cycling light loads?

If I understand correctly, they media blast the surface to prep it for Cerakote, so not much reason to do anything more to it than hit it with a rust inhibitor so it doesn't get worse.

The O-ring replacement should fix your light load issue. Mine did that when the O-ring became hard. Never had an issue prior to that with light loads.

i had a trap 1187 and it was fine and sold it to a trap shooting friend when i bought a left hand 1187 and i have used it for all the clay games and hunting with out any problems with very little maintence. last night i shot a 24-25 at trap with federal 1-1/8 oz # 8 shot.

After cleaning and an o ring, works fine, except with cheap winchester shells, which sometimes dont want to extract. I will probably get a replacement extractor/spring. Out of about 85 loads of varying power levels, only had failure to extract twice, when I held the gun loose from the hip to try to make it jam. And once the bolt came back but didn't extract the shell. I have had problems with ejection/extraction from cheap winchesters with the maxus I used to have, and just learned to avoid them.

I hear you about cheapo Winchester shells. These were the all-time worst shot shells that I have ever used:

Glad that 11-87 seems to be a keeper. The 1100 is my all time favorite, the 11-87 is even more reliable with the gas system allowing a wider load selection. :)

Stay safe.

I have one just like it. That's a good deal. I have a slug barrel for mine and it is the best slug gun I ever had. I also have a field barrel and my son prefers my 11-87 for turkey hunting. My grandson has a nicer 11-87 for trap and does very well with it.

90 to nothing a quick polish job of the chamber will solve your extraction problem. Some steel wool wrapped around a bore brush chucked into a drill will do the job in a few minutes. I had to do that to an 870 express that had bad sticking problems with any steel case loads. Never a hiccup since. It's easy to try. Best of luck with your 11-87.

I bought my 11-87 Special Purpose back in 87 or 88. It was a special package which included the 30” barrel and the iron sighted slug barrel seen here. It’s accounted for dozens of whitetails in this configuration. I’ve always used 3” mags just for the enhanced shock. I’ve had many bucks drop in their tracks, including my personal best which was taken at 65 yards which is also the farthest I’ve taken any deer with it due to the heavily forested areas I hunt. I have 4 bbls for my 1187 Special Purpose.
Cav scope mount 21” Turkey bbl,; 21” Rifle Sight bbl,; 21” VR bbl ; and 28” VR BBL.
All except the 21” RS bbl accept REM Choke tubes.
The stocks and metal are Real tree camo factory coat.

It’s the best of many shotguns I’ve owned.
However, I also have a M870 pump with 3-bbls. I shot a national record with the Rifle Sighted bbl at the 2002 NPSC only to be beat by 1X two relays later by current record holder.! (550-5X vs 550-6X). That bbl has a very long forcing cone, and is exceptionally accurate with Remington reduced recoil 1oz slugs.

Instead of using the standard neoprene O-rings in the 1100-1187, use the green AC ring. They last 3-5X longer….
My 1187 cycles everything I’ve ever fed it, including reloads when we still could use lead shot…

I sure do miss using my “low brass equivalent” Green Dot 1-1/4loz load of #5’s for ducks!

It's hard to beat a good solid shotgun like that for under $500.00.

If you're having it dipped, use fine emery cloth, then a q-tip wipe of Birchwood-Casey Rust and Blue Remover, and wash the spot and dry it immediately.

Good Snag

0000 steel wool and some gun oil should work on that corrosion. just soak the pad in it and lightly scrub. It shouldn't hurt the finish since it's 0000
