I might have to fly out to LAX next week and do some work down in Newport Beach for a day. Would probably fly out the night before and then back then following evening. This trip would be all work related and not really any time for fun stuff.

Quick questions:
1. Any places to absolutely avoid? (roads mostly...)
2. Do any of you think its worth the time checking a bag so that I can bring some 'protection'? Otherwise, its a carry on only and you know what that means... not even a pocket knife.

I really hate travelling these days and I'm hoping the whole thing gets cancelled. What the heck did we install all that fancy, expensive video conferencing for when we never use it?!?

I'm off to check packing.org...

** Well that just about turned my stomach. :barf:

Yeh, forget the pistolas.....no good to you in the belly of the plane; and once you get there, if you were to defend yourself without written permission....well, you know.

That said, SoCal is an interesting place to visit. Plenty of restaurants (hope your company is picking up the tab), and the native dress can be attractive. There's always lots of cars and lots of people.

Have a carne asada burrito for me....and maybe an in-n-out too. And while you're at it, get some loompia. And if you can find a tactical banjoleer, have him show you around.

Where will you be staying? The 55 and 22 freeways absolutely suck. So does the 5. And the 405 and the 91. In other words it's gonna suck no matter how smart you try to play it, we just deal with it here, it's like death and taxes but in California you append smog, traffic and worse, Democrats (see taxes). Newport Beach sucks because you got narrow streets and the 55/405 interchange to deal with. We have a few toll freeways but I been on them about 3 times since I moved down here 7 years ago.

Ever had Vietnamese food?

Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, CA (and for me, the Huntington Library -they have documents from lotsa famous peepul including Washington) are about the only saving grace for Lost Angeles.

Skunk: not quite sure where I'll be staying if I end up going - I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll get cancelled. ;) Will probably stay either right near the airport or in Newport Beach near the office (wherever that is...). I'm traveling with my boss so I'm sure we'll be working most of the time, but thanks everyone for the suggestions of fun things to do! :)

I wouldn't worry too much about protection in Newport Beach. The most common crime there is arresting Dennis Rodman for his parties disturbing the peace. Lots of good restaurants too.

But, from the sounds of it, you'll be up in Irvine.......Skunk's town. Still lots of good places to stay and eat.

You'll be in the upscale part of Orange County not L.A.

I would be checking a bag with a couple of pistolas if I were you. And not just because it's Kali. What John Q. Law doesn't know won't hurt him. Don't give up your rights.

People like you make me laugh. You really have NO idea how nice this place is. Maybe you are better off staying at home with your mama.

Let me guess, everything you know about CA you learned on TV. Am I right?

Been to San Fran twice and San Diego once. Didn't really care for either. So, yeah, I do know how "nice" it is. Get over yourself.

Newport Beach is safe. It's not worth the hassle of airport security to take along a firearm. As long as the boss is picking up the tab try the Ritz in Fashion Island or the Bayside. They're expensive but memorable.

Newport Beach is VERY SAFE.I wouldn't hassle with bringing a pistol of even a knife. There are great resturants in Newport and Balboa.
Fashion Island is a mall in case you were wondering.
Lots of very interesting bathing suits at balboa pier.

If you are working in Newport,don't bother staying near LAX.Its a 40 to 45 minute drive,with NO traffic,with traffic,maybe an hour & 1/2

For what its worth... you would be WAY better off flying into John Wayne than LAX. Closer to where you need to be and better places to stay nearby. Most hotels around LAX are a little bit well worn.

Newport Beach is very nice and quite safe. Dont go anywhere in Condition White and you will be fine.

California really is one of the best places to live in America, aside from the Communism.

We really ought to take it back.

Yes, don't go through LAX unless you have to! John Wayne all the way (except flights end earlier at night).

Newport Beach and Irvine are some of the safest urban areas in California. Which still means anything can happen. I'd pack a folding knife if I were you, just on principle, and pack your street awareness too.

Our traffic sucks, day or night, weekday and weekend. Don't go out of your way to encourage road rage. I read about too many violent incidents daily.

Archer is right...just stay alert, there's way too many people in Condition White for them to bother with you if you look half-awake. Come by my work and borrow my Emerson if you want, I'll just have to pack my HK instead :D

Thanks guys! I appreciate your input. Still waiting on the boss to decide what is going on... Skunk, I'll PM you if I end up in town and if things work out maybe we can grab an adult beverage. I'll be shooting my M99 this weekend, so I should still be grinning. ;)

If you come to San Francisco

pack whatever you like,if you obey the traffic laws you'll never get searched anyway...
big folder knives like vaquero cold steel are legal.
pepper spray is legal.

Thirteen years doing traffic striping in San Diego and Orange counties qualifies me to say how nice it is. I lived in a beach town and used to surf before work many days.

Still, I'm glad I got out and returned to the great Northwest.

Why fly into LAX why not John Wayne airport? It would cut your driving time in half! Skunk is right, no such thing as a nice freeway in SOCal especially w/ all the construction going on  & the crazy drivers! I work in Newport Beach...nice place if all you have to do is hangout on the beach, shop or go shooting :D
Good luck on your trip ;)

Forget the beaches. They're more crowded than Disneyland.

10-ring, since when did you work in NB? And you don't cruise by for lunch? Sup wit dat??? :p

I concur, try flying into John Wayne airport. Home of the vertical liftoff.
