I want a .223 varmint gun. I have narrowed my choices down to a Savage Varmint with Black synt stock and 26" bbl. Or a T/C Encore or G2. Is the G2 or Encore as accurate as the Savage? What should I do.

My brother is a varminter in Ohio who loves Savages but also has TC firearms as well (pistol, not carbine). He may have some opinions but he is rather slow to answer e-mails. I'll ask him. Hopefully you'll have some answers here.

I would be doubtful that the TC is as accurate as a Savage... my brother has two heavy-barreled Savages in .223 and 22-250 that get .25MOA and .15MOA groups at 100 yards (he's a real stickler for reloading techniques and fire-laps his barrels) -- I didn't fire-lap mine in .308 and am getting well under .5MOA as I begin to work up new loads for the new Lapua brass I recently purchased.

Savage accuracy is one thing, but this TC rifle below:

looks way too handy to pass up if it's accuracy is adequate for your varminting needs.

Go with the laminate stock on the Savage or be prepared to replace it. The stock's a hunk of junk, I have one. My next Savage will have a laminate or replacement synthetic stock. I sunk a lot of time and money into mine and, although it works now, I would have rather had a new rifle I didn't have to "fix".

As far as accuracy, I've seen some pretty accuate Thompsons, but the Savages, for the most part, sound like they are more accurate out of the box. The funny thing is, TC's big selling point is that you can swap the barrels, but Savage lets you swap barrels too - and Savage barrels run about $100 less than TC barrels. Admitidly, you can't swap Savage barrels as fast as the TCs, but for $100 less per barrel, I can put up with it. One thing to point out though, you can't turn the Savage into a pistol - TC does have that going for them. You also have a much wider variety with the TC barrels.

I'd go with the Savage (matter of fact, in a few weeks I will go with the Savage), but like I said, if your looking at the 12FV, take a serious look at the 12BV.
