Virginia and CCW

I got a job offer that would take me half way across the country again to Virginia. I will be a student apprentace working in DC and based out of Virginia. What can I expect? What are the local rules on CCW? I will bet I have to get another one, right. Where are some fun places to shoot at? I was TDY to Virginia for 2 months once. I left the base only twice to sign for a sailor from the local PD for public intoxication when I had the duty.

So any help would be appreciated.

You need to apply for a permit at the Circuit Court where you reside.

Can't carry the gun into DC (yet).

getting a ccw here is easy enough not too sure on compatibility with Kansas thy the virginia citizens defence league www.vcdl.org they have plenty of links to look at. As far as Dc goes forget it for now

At least you can open carry in VA without a permit...man I miss it there.

Doc, you'll like VA gun laws. Well, the fact that there aren't many.

Getting a VA permit, resident or non-resident, is pretty easy. A hunter safety certificate is enough to satisfy the requirement for "training."

The NRA range (45 minutes from D.C. on a decent traffic time) is a good place to shoot.

Then there's Bull Run municipal park in Manassas (45 to 60 minutes away, depending on traffic) where they have, of all things, a trap and skeet range, and archery facilities open to the public.

Just about anyone can open carry without a permit.

You'll love the traffic, though. Pretty sure it's #2 worst in the country. The insanity levels in driving are as follows, from worst to least horrible: D.C. drivers, MD drivers, and VA drivers. Get out of the Northern Virginia area as quickly as you can. : )

military service gets you the easy gun permit. my kid just hada show the dd what ever the heck the number was.

Thanks guys, Sans you slay me! And I thought being stuck behind a bunch of Grannies who just ran through the gates of the retirement communities on nice days around here was bad.
Do you still have to go through all the tunnels choking on fumes and metal bridges that shake? I was reminded by an old Navy buddy (one I got from the brig) that we went to Portsmouth TDY also for 6 weeks. The first was Newport News Skunk works. I remember it was the only place I saw McDonalds plywooded up, and not just one.
I am pretty sure that is where I will be heading again.

Most of the Newport News area is still a cesspool. I would not work in DC but Virginia has very good laws. The DD-214 is more than suffcient. There are many many retired, former and active military living in the state.

Virginia's CCW requirements

In Virginia you need to take one of the following classes:
An Armed Security Guard Class
An NRA class
Fill out the application and turn it in to the Clerk of Court where you live. Pay $50 up front [Non refundable.] You then wait 45 days for the police to check you out.

Looks like several others have done a great job detailing the VA ccw process and some related laws. Only one I didn't see right off the top of my head is you MUST OC if you go to a restaurant that serves alcohol. Even if you have a CHP.

And, if you ever get down towards Richmond, let me know. You'll love it here. We have 4 real seasons, the beach and mountains are only 2 hours either way (from Richmond) and we have much fewer corn fields.

Purchase the "Virginia Gun Owner's Guide".
ALL of our law on lethal force is case law, not statute law.
The book has a very good summary of the 'rules'.

In Virginia you need to take one of the following classes:

You do not need to take these classes in Virgina. A DD-214 or Hunter's Safety Class is suffcient. I am not saying the NRA course does not have value, it is just not required.

im at the other end of the state - near the carolina line but maybe we could hook up and i'll take you to my range. no. virginia is not for me. stay out of md- not gun friendly, and avoid newport news, portsmouth, and some parts of hampton

You have to be able to prove you are a resident to apply for the resident permit.
There have been enough shenanigans that Some places want to see a voter registration card, utility bill, etc. to verify residency.

You might be able to get away with applying non-resident and ten using that until you can prove residency to apply for a resident permit.
