I have been looking for a nice set of 1911 grips for my Kimber Custom 2 and came across this web site.....Handicraft-Vu.com
The gentlemans name is Mr. Vu Kim Son and is a Old School Craftsman and Businessman from Vietnam. He uses materials such as Bone, Horn, ivory, & mother of Pearl. Some of his work looks very very nice. He also has video's of making some of these grips. Has anybody bought from him before? I havent purchased anything outside the States. Any feedback would be very helpful...Thanks

HEY! Read that link again! After the write-up where it says he seems to have disappeared and stiffed several would be customers!

I don't begrudge anyone making 1911s look better than any other pistol out there, but an American classic with Vietnamese stocks? Really?

Sure ivory is easy to get in certain parts of the world, we call it banned here as those who trade in it have no problem killing the source to obtain it. The only way around it is to purchase CAREFULLY either cultured ivory (read farm/zoo raised) or pre-ban vintage.

If you're looking for beautiful custom grips http://shop.thefinergrain.com/main.sc is the only link you should need.

My apologies if I've offended anyone, half my family lives in various asian countries (because they were born there) but some things, like buying U.S. made stocks for the most popular pistol our army ever sported, just seems right.

Not Ivory.

Everything on that site looks like Cow bone to me. The fake turtle shell looks cool as well. That's good news, cause I won't put ivory on anything. Looks like good stuff. Price is right.

Waiting on some more customer feedback before I order from Vietnam. That's a long way from home. Paypal?

Maybe I wasn't clear in my previous post:

VU HAS SKIPPED TOWN WITH PEOPLES MONEY.
THEY DIDN'T GET ANYTHING FROM HIM.

Go back to post #2 and click on the link. The reviewer posted an update on this fellow in Vietnam stating he has defrauded numerous people and cannot be reached now.

Can you say Barrister Charles Moore of Nigeria calling about your lottery winnings? Stick with Sarge's grips, you won't be disappointed. Also, his pics are of the actual stocks you will receive.

LMAO! i just read the last few pages of that thread. it really takes next to nothing to scam some people--cannot believe the OP is considering dealing with this guy

Sorry he apparently is not responding. However, about 18 months ago I purchased 2 sets of buffalo horn grips for a Kimber & Springfield. They are FANTASTIC!!!!

After reading the conclusions that he abandoned customers and split the scene, I used the "contact" feature on his site and submitted a trouble ticket basically asking if he was still in business. It took a couple of weeks, but I received this reply yesterday:

Dear Mr. [Roswell_Kid],

We still doing our business. I don't understand whom said we are not? Please let me know what do you need?

I picked up some Sarges grips. They are very nice. The standard thickness is very comfortable, as good as a 1911 is going to get anyway.

I sent Vu Kim Son a set of CZ 75 grips to use as a model for him to make some grips for me. That has been over a year, and I have yet to get anything from him. I have contacted him several times, and he has confirmed that he got them.

Buyer beware.

Zerodefect, that is one 1911 that lives up to it's master's name! It is also a fine example for EVERY manufacturer to follow; elegant, tasteful, subdued and simple to the point of perfection.

Thank-you again for sharing.

I checked out kimson site and I want some of hose black horn grips REALLY BAD I just wish he was legit.

Anyone know where i could get the similiar grips?

Thankyou, DW really listened to us, and I had to eat my words, more or less.

I'm holding out for some of Sarges Aboyna Burl grips for my CDP. Didn't spot any in fullsize:

I bought some bone grips from vu kimson back in 2008 and I received them in short order.

It's too bad he stopped filling orders (although I think "scam" is inaccurate -- nobody is sending cash, right? If you don't receive a product or a response, issue a chargeback on the credit card, or do the paypal equivalent).

In fact, I just ordered another set. I haven't seen anything like the level of craftsmanship available in the US at such affordable prices.

And, seeing as my 1911 itself wasn't manufactured in the US, I don't see any reason to buy US in particular. Globalization FTW! :neener:

The value is worth the risk, even after all I've heard. I'll let y'all know if Mr. Kimson comes through or not.

Do keep us updated. If things don't work out I still think Sarge will out do anyone else. Saw some mastedon on his site not long ago as well as mammoth tooth and he's getting in to more exotics like snake and eel skin.

Let's hope Mr. Kim Son just had technical problems. I'm OK with the whole globalization thing, heck I'm half Asian but IT'S A 1911! Either way good luck.

Yeah, some of those exotics are really cool. I like the idea of mastodon or mammoth tooth. ;) I think I'll buy some of those when I've got some spare cash, or if Mr. Kimson doesn't deliver.

Update: I received an order update email: Status: Grips processing.

I get the distinct impression someone is alive behind the boilerplate. Now to see if he actually ships them, and how long it takes. :)

Just got an email saying my grips are ready and will be shipped now.

I might not be around when they arrive, but I'll post pics once I have them in hand.
