Good stuff. They're not any thicker than the stock Hogue ones which I like. They show a bit more handling marks/oils than the rubber black hogue ones. But that doesn't really matter.

This pattern is called the Gator Backs, and is not overly aggressive. These are black paper micarta (blasted).

check them out if you haven't. vzgrips.com

Thanks for the review. I've been considering those specific grips myself. In my initial research I was put off by the fact that the blasted black micarta would darken with use since I like the color as they come out of the package. However, as I've found more pictures of well used ones on-line, I like the patina the get as they get used.

I do have a question, though. How long are they front to back compared to your Hogue grips (I have a set of wood Hogues on my 1911 now)? You don't need to measure the exact dimensions, just are they longer or shorter and is it noticeable.

Easily cleaned with mineral spirits(paint thinner) to restore original color.

I understand that, but as you can see in the video, just the normal body oil on your hands darkens the grips. Using mineral spirits to restore the original color is kind of pointless unless you are putting the pistol in a display case or plan on using gloves all the time.

They do still look good when darkened.

Yeah I was surprised how quickly they showed fingerprints. I shot it a bit yesterday and the grips are comfortable and allow good purchase without chafing or otherwise causing discomfort.

To answer JTQ's question, the stock hogues measure about 1.52" across the widest portion just above the cutout for the mainspring housing pin; the VZs measure about 1.48". Across the middle and across the top the difference is negligible.

They look great on your Dan Wesson Heritage.

VZs Blasted Black is a nice greyish color. I have a pair of their Blasted Black Canvas Micarta grips in the 320 pattern (fairly smooth pattern) on my Sig RCS 1911. Here is a pic of it wearing them:

I have standard thickness VZ grips on all seven of my 1911s. I prefer the ETC or Double Diamonds grips shown below ... from top: ETC bobbed frame, ETC standard frame, Double Diamonds standard frame.

That's what I thought :) ... the color is called dirty olive. I only chose the black desert tan on the Dan Wessons so that I wouldn't have green grips on all of my 1911s. Here's the Valor with ETC grips in black desert tan and the Ed Brown Special Forces Carry with ETC grips in dirty olive.
