New WalMart COMPANY policy. And for those who profess to NEVER buy gun related itms from Wally, I get 550 copper plated rds (11 50 rd boxes) for about 10.60. Range I go to charges $3.00 per 50 rd box of unplated crap Rem thunderbolt. They get the $10/hr range fee until they compete. Or did capitalism get repealed? Joe

Thanks. i asked her if it was a company policy that had changed. Unfortnuately both her and her co-worker were annoyed that I even asked such a question. I really didn't have any other choice than to go there because I had no ammo and got called to go shooting sun. morning. All the gunstores were closed. Looks like I'm going to stop going to Wal-Mart. I'll just stock up from local gunstores. It just drives me nuts that the cheapest bulk pack the gun store said they had was 20$. But at least they know my face and respond when I ask a question.

Our wally world does the same thing. Even the display of the reg asks if your 21 and the clerk will ask if it is for rifle or pistol.

evan price, that was funny!! I know that the cashiers are just doing their jobs but when enforcing such ludicrous policies it's hard not to find the humour. I have no sympathy for WalMart employees. There are all sorts of employment where one is forced to comply with inane rules and codes. It's just part of what we all need to do to earn a living. OTOH, some people are so incomprehensibly stupid that it would be nearly impossible not to have a little bit of fun with them ...

I hardly buy anything gun related from Wal Mart because the gun shows are so much cheaper, but several years ago I was going to stock up on Fed 22 that was on sale.

The clerk asked if I was going to shoot the 22 in a rifle or handgun. The question actually comes up on the register.
I said what difference does it make? She said if I said a handgun, then she was required it ask for proof that I was 21.
I said I'm pushing 70 and if you can't tell I'm way past 21 I'm asking you for a date.:D

She rang up the ammo.

yeah, M2 Carbine, that is a classic example of not seeing the forest through the trees. they get so wrapped up in procedure that common sense never enters the equation.

Has anybody experienced this before or have any ideas what was going on?

They always ask for an ID, when I buy a couple .22 LR value pack 550 round brick ammo.

And they wanted to know, if it's for a pistol or rifle.

:D

Federal gun law at Wal Mart depend upon whether the
clerk saw his or her shadow as they walked from the
parking lot to work that morning. Try again a different
day and you may get a different rule.

rather than clerks learning the rules, they get lazy and just say no.

quality of people working at walmart is showing. I dont think they are all this way, dont get me wrong, however there are quite a few bad apples IMO.

Last time I was in Wally World, I bought:

1 Pack of Camel Lights (box)
1 Box of WWB in .380 ACP
1 Can of Blaze Orange Spraypaint.

They never asked for ID until I got to the spraypaint?! Even the cashier was amused.

Our local Wally has good, knowledgeable, and helpful people in Sporting Goods. The only time there is a problem is when these clerks are off the floor. Even then, an assistant manager usually gets things straightened out quickly and politely.

The wally-world emps. are just following their rules. By Federal laws no person can buy a handgun, or ammo that will fire in a handgun, unless they are 21 or older. Off track, a little= I went to K-Mart a few years back, for a Ruger 10-22 on sale, and the counter person would not sell, untill the call came back from the Feds. on my back-ground check-even though it states on my Indiana CCW Permit that they Shall deliver to me any firearm. I almost told them to call a Cop, they were breaking the law==NOT Me!! HA!!

Friend of mine loves to tell em that the 9mm ammo he asks for goes in his machine gun.:p

Well it does!?!

So you Walmart haters should just get your ammo at K-Mart.

Oh thats right ... they quit selling ammo after pressure from Michael Moore YEARS ago.

I myself am always amused by Wal-Mart. I have gone in and purchased ammo (9mm) and it is a hit or miss on whether or not I get "carded". I am 32 and look older most days. I remember 1 day I went into Wal-Mart and bought ammo paid at the sportinggoods counter, no questions asked, on the way out I grabbed an R rated movie while at the checkout counter (ammo in hand w/ receipt) got carded for the Movie. So being 19 and hassled about 22 ammo not that bad.

Sorry sir, that is not true. As someone posted a bit of the ATF faq line above, at 18-20 you can buy ammo that will fire in a handgun if the clerk is confident you are planning to use it in a rifle.

Otherwise, as many people have said, with Thompson or Encore style 'hand-rifles' being technically pistols and able to fire pretty much all standard rifle rounds, anyone 21 or under would be able to buy NO ammo
