WalMart ammo.

I keep hearing all of these tales about this mythical Academy place that has cheaper ammo than walmart, but I've never seen one. I think you're all just messing with me.

The people at my local walmart are ok, especially one older guy that works there. That guy never asks me what type of gun the ammo is for, but when other employees do I use the "subgun" answer. One time a customer behind me asked, "hey, what kind of subgun do you have?" Another time the guy behind the counter said, "son, you're gonna need a whole lot more ammo than that if you've got a subgun." Most of the time they're baffled and eventually just pick something.

At the local Wally's, they never ask what kind of gun it's for. Maybe they figure I'm old enough to own either :p . They do want you to pay for it at the gun counter instead of the front, but since they ring up all your other stuff at the same time that actually lets you skip the lines at the front.

BTW, thanks for the reply lbmii- just what I wanted to know.

LiquidTension, if I weren't so stingy, I'd send you one of the three (at least) we have here in Birmingham. Hopefully, Academy will open a store near you. The only ammo that I find much cheaper is the aluminum Blazer 9mil, which was $3.86/box the last time I checked*. I only with they could bring Blazer .45ACP down near that price.

*Their Blazer .44Spl 200gr GDHP is also a good value, at $11.something/box.

The Academy on my way home has several types of ammo cheaper than the WWB ammo at WalMart. Both CCI Blazer (Al) and Wolf are $3.86/50 and CCI Blazer Brass and WWB are $4.99/50. This compares to WWB at WalMart of $10.9x/100 = $5.47/50. There are also 250 round packs of UMC (I think that is it - havent gotten that cause I usually get the Blazer) for $29.xx And it is much more fun at Academy - with better folks too.

I used to buy my ammo regularly at Wally World as well until I bought my .45. Found out it's a lot cheaper at Gander Mountain ($9.99 for 50-rd. box of 230-gr. FMJ, $14.99 for 20-rd. box of Federal Hydra-Shok 230-gr. JHP).

Once in a while, Dunham's has a good deal, but the stores up here have a really bad selection to choose from. (Warning: stay away from A-Merc ammo that they sell there. I bought 2 boxes of 158-gr. LRN for my .38. Took me 2 days and an extra 30 rounds of WWB 125-gr. JSP/"WinClean" to get the lead build-up out of the barrel.)

Last time I was there, a week ago, I had a guy who knew what he was talking about. He also had a "authorized to sell firearms" tag hanging off his ID tag; if this is the new policy, that may explain why the wallyworld arms merchants now seem to know what they're selling.

He actually assumed my 9mm was for a handgun, without bothering to ask. This was a problem, because I'm 18... He gave me a look and I saw "customer 21?" on the register screen, at which point I told him, "It's for a carbine."

Bear Gulch-

CAL RANCH is great. I grew up in Idaho Falls and bought my 22 ammo there. Unfortunately there are none here in the greater Boise area, but there is a drugstore where I live that sells ammo fairly reasonably. Actually this drugstore sells ammo, guns, hunting licenses, etc. Talk about a blast from the past. I try to buy from them becasue they are local. Their guns are twenty to thirty dollars more, but I'm giving them my business - especially when it comes to Rugers.

Incidentally when I have bought ammo from the local Wal-Mart I have never had anyone ask me if the ammo is for a rifle or handgun. If the clerk dosen't know they just ask me to point out what I want.

Here in the People'$ Democratic Republic of Blagoevich (aka Illinois), just outside the walls of his Imperial Highness King Dickey the Second, you have to a FOID (Firearm Owners ID) Card to even cast you eyes on a gun or ammo. So I got my 11 year old daughter one (there $5 and good for 5 years). I love letting her buy her own .22 and 20 ga. shotgun ammo in Wal-mart. The clerks always look to me when the cash register says "Ask for FOID card". I just point at her as she's standing there holding her FOID Card and her money.

One time the elderly lady (housewares must have been over-staffed that night) nearly had a cornary when my daughter came up plunked down two value packs of Winchester 20ga and asked for a couple of boxes of 550 count Remington .22's. :what:  :what:

Catuela: I'd pay money to see that retired 1SG as the greeter at the front passing out hugs. NOT !!!

Jefnvk: Everyone knows that Rifle and Pistol ammo is  and can come to life and run amok, but shotgun ammo is incapable of becoming self-guided. (just check my skeet scores   )
