Walmart rifle closeouts

So when does this start?

Its not really a planned "event" or anything. Typically though Walmart often marks down a lot of outdoors products around August 1st of each year (could be a bit earlier or later). Mostly stuff that has been in inventory too long and they want to clear it out and restock different items.

There's not guarantee it'll happen in any given year, or if it does how much product will be discounted or by how much. It's just basically a recognition of a previous pattern that if you do some homework you can take advantage of.

It can be a good bit of work and hoops to jump through, but you can get some good deals if successful. And honestly bargain chasing is something I love in and of itself. My mom had me tagging along on Beanie Baby runs waiting in line for 5-6 hours for new releases back when I was in my early teens and I've always loved going out on Black Friday for example.

After you factor in the rebates and such, during the 2020 clearance I think I paid a total of $200 for seven Savage Axis rifles (several with hardwood stock plus scope package), and about $125 for a Nikon and 2 Leupold scopes.

No more guns than I've seen at the last few walmart I've been in, I can't imagine they have much of anything in inventory to close out this year.

Kind of life looking for a rebate on a new car this year

From what I understand, Walmart clearance deals are store specific. For example, for whatever reason my local store kept getting shipments of one specific Spiderco knife. IIRC, at one point they had over a hundred. Takes up too much space and inventory room.

So, they marked them down. And marked them down more. Finally, these specific $80 knives were down to $15. I was in sales at that time and bought about fifteen for my customers. Still have a couple.

At one point years ago a local store had too many Remington 11-87’s. They were told to move them. After a couple weeks they were marked down from over $700 down to $200 range IIRC. Word got out and they were gone in an hour.

As I understand it, a Walmart store does not return any product. Too much handling and paperwork. It’s cheaper and quicker to simply mark it down and blow out the offending inventory

Anyway, while I was traveling I stopped at maybe a dozen different stores. Never found a deal on rifles, but honestly to me the reward wasn’t worth the time and effort. Then again, I wasn’t able to us Brickseek

They did clearance some last year, but not very many, not as many as in years past. I'm glad I got my .223 heavy barrel Axis II in 2020, hard to beat $29 (after rebate) for a brand new scoped rifle.

I don't work there anymore, and the one on my way home from work now doesn't have any guns except airguns. The one I worked at is the opposite direction from work, so I don't get in there very often.

Me and the old man will be deer hunting with our savage axis .243s from the 2020 closeouts. About $35 all in for both rifles after rebates. Very accurate guns, doubtful I’ll ever find a better deal that the $49 synthetic stocked one with the $50 rebate. you wanna pay me a dollar to take this rifle off your hands? I think I can help. I bought 5 of them total 3 at the -1$ price, wood stocked axis I paid about 35 after rebate and I did get a Remington 700 adl in 223 for $79. I sold most of them less the 2 .243s, shoulda kept the 700 in hindsight. Oh well

My local Walmart in IRMO SC has about 10 axis on the shelf and a few shotguns. They had a decent amount of ammo. 308,6.5CM, 450 bushmaster and 350 legend.

I got 2 rem 700 and a savage back then

I miss the closeout and like many deals I was late to the game. I did score big in 2020... I paid from 29 to 250 for a dozen or so... the earlier ya jumped the more ya paid. I did not buy them to flip em. sadly I only shot a 11-87 20 gauge from the group so far

I missed alot of the deals, but did score a couple. The savage axis was a wicked good deal. the 11-87 i got has been problematic, but oh well, still a good boat gun.

My local walmart stopped selling guns. They still sell air guns for now. And they get M/L in too. Any ways i bought my Savage 93 heavy barrel wood stock on clearance. It was 150.00 or 165.00. It came with a weaver scope. The next closest walmart sells guns and reloading supplies. They had a 10/22 there recently. It's been a few years since i saw a Ruger at walmart.

Ours quit selling guns too, though the one 3 miles down the road still does too. They do seem to be getting a surplus of 22lr ammo building up, so I keep checking for sale prices when I’m there looking for cat litter or soap. Federal AutoMatch and cheap Win and Fed 12ga 100 round packs are cheaper there than anywhere else but still not good enough to stock up on.

It’s hard to get anyone over to sporting goods period. They had a box of Federal 170 gr 30-30 that I stalked for weeks before I could get the time to get someone over there. Still worth it to get 30-30 for $21 a box this year (I regret not buying 10 boxes of Remington corelokt 30-06 for $14 a box 3 years ago).

During the big store reset that finished this week the sporting goods counter went away. When asked where the gun and knife display cases had been moved to one of the floor managers said "We are going to leave firing arms and that kind of stuff to Academy."
