Has anyone used the special order catalogue lately? How long did it take? Were they able to tell you how long it would be?
I know a lot of folks hate them but I've bought 4 guns at my LGS this year and the rife I ordered from Wal-Mart was cheaper than his cost. So he doesn't mind, in fact if mine comes in he's thinking about getting one. My problem is I've been waiting for a month and I can't get anyone there to tell me how much longer. Just, "We'll call you when it comes in.
Just curious to hear of the experience of others.

Years ago, I was going to special-order a rifle from Walmart. The employee (an older guy) looked me over and said, "You need half of the price as a down payment," as though I couldn't cough up that much money if my life depended on it.

I said that it was no problem (I actually had the entire cost in cash in my pocket), but he kept tossing objections my way. Clearly, he didn't want to be bothered.

Needless to say, I went elsewhere.

My brother ordered one about 2 years ago. He paid for it up front, kept the receipt and picked it up when it came in, which was only about a week. It was a good transaction with no problems. He got a better price than he would have elsewhere too. I'd do it in a minute.

I have not ordered from them. I did overhear as a guy did.
The clerk called to verify that it was in stock ( in another state)
and that the gun would be arriving in about 4 days.

Here in KY all the Walmarts carry rifles and shotguns, mostly 770s, Edge, ATR, and the like. The catalogue has just about everything Sports South carries in long guns (excluding rearsenalled imports) Usually if I want something my LGS doesn't have I get it at Buds, this time Walmart has Buds beat by $200.
Thanks to you all who said they should be able to get me an ETA. This experience I'm having is exactly why LGS' have nothing to worry about from these clowns.

You need to have a FFL to sell ammo in a store.

Last time I checked, walmart was using Ellett Brothers as their distributor to get guns from. If EB has it in stock, it only takes a few days or so to get it to the store

Sometimes your firearm purchasing experience at Walmart depends on the staff. If the store was smart (and my local Walmart was) they hired folks knowledgeable and enthusiastic about guns and ammo. I have always had a pleasant buying experience at my Walmart (purchased a Henry .22 lever action and a Ruger Mini-14, both way cheaper than I could get them at any local gun shop or on the internet.)
If they carry firearms, they have to maintain an FFL. They do have their curious policies though. A manager must escort you to the door of the store with your new firearm and you cannot buy ammo at the same time. You can put the new gun in your car and then walk back in to the store to buy the ammo.
I must admit that I have never ordered a gun from their catalog though. So I can't comment on that experience.

They might use different distributors depending on guns type or locale, not sure

This was true at one time, but no longer is. The law changed. You can now sell ammo without an FFL.

They do not sell handguns, altho I did read they were expanding the amount of store that sell firearms from about 30% to about 50%.

I was in a WALMART in Jacksonville looking thru their gun catalog........
didn't offer everything but did have some preferred shotguns I like......

I also noticed that the catalog did say that 50% was required to order.....
    company policy, I guess!

You should have turned him into his manager, and written to corp office.
I do this at times and I actually get responses and coupons, (I don't do it to get anything in return other than getting the 'problem' fixed).
Try it next time, whether you go out to eat and the meal is bad, or like you encountered, bad customer service--I even did it at costco, and it just so happened that the ceo was there with his inner circle and we were actually contacted as we were leaving the doors of the place. With business on the low side, management doesn't want any hitches in their giddy-ups.

Yeah, I think tracking down a manager is my next step. They are as as rare as plaid deer at Walmart though. The guy who asked about saga, they don't carry anything but long hunting guns in the strictest sense. No all black stuff there. You can find the catalog online still says 2010 on it but still good. If you need prices just print the pages and scan them on one of the self serve scanners at the store.
They have an accutrigger model 10 package in the case worth the money but if I don't get this rifle I'm through with them. BTW it is half down like most folks said, but its 100% down on special orders at my LGS so I don't have a problem with that. If all of their stores are this ill trained its no wonder they aren't making enough to keep guns at all their stores.

Moral of the storey make them call the distributor when you order.
My next two rifles on the want list were a BA .223 and .308. I originally ordered the Howa Ranchland combo with Hogue Stock and Nikko Scope for $349.00. In coyote sand, the green and black were ringing up $539.00 which is what Buds charges, I had my doubts this was gonna happen at that price. My original order was June 16. I've been back in store every week since and kept being told all is well any day now.

This time I stayed calm (barely) but very firm. I pointed put to them that there was a help number on the front page of their copy of the catalog. The guy made the call and learned the Howa was discontinued and it was when I ordered, despite all of the all clears I got up front.

A girl says she wants to go get the supervisor and talk to him. I tell her that I'll walk out happy of they sell me the Savage 10fxp that is in the rack for the same price. Supervisor comes out and agrees, I look the savage over carefully as I'm getting the floor model. Fit and finish looks good, but lots of fingerprints on the barrel, I get the guy to knock off 12 more bucks.

Final words waited three weeks but walked out with accutrigger model 10 in .308 with cheap Bushnell 3x9x40 for $337.

You guys tell me, did I do alright in the end?

I think you did great. I'd have definitely bought the Savage for that. They are great rifles, and imo they can't be beat even at the full price of $387-397 depending on which Walmart. Everyone I've seen has shot sub moa groups right out of the box. They are not only very accurate, but they have a good trigger, and are a quality gun. Plus if you ever want to rebarrel them, they are super easy to rebarrel.

I know a friend bought one a few years back in 30-06 and he got the best deal I've ever heard of on one. He went in to buy one and they told him they were sold out. He asked if they would sell him the display model. They agreed, and he talked them into selling it to him for $250. How he did it I have no idea, but that's the best deal I've ever heard of anyone getting. His is one awesome gun, and I've tried to buy it from him a few times. His came topped with a Simmons 8 Point scope, and he is still using it today.

The other ones I've shot have all come with Simmons scopes also and they seemed to be decent. Certainly not great, but decent enough to use until you could get something better.

I see they now include a Bushnell on many of them, and I had one of those Bushnell's and it was the biggest POS I've ever owned as far as a scope was concerned. The glass sucked, the adjustments sucked, and overall it just was junk. It did hold zero though. The only time I had it lose zero was when I knocked it over and it shot a 5-6 inches right the next trip to the range. As long as that didn't happen it stayed zeroed though. This thing made the Simmons Blazers the older ones had seem like a Schmidt and Bender.

So my opinion is I'd sell the scope, and put something a little better on it, but other than the scope they are one of my favorite rifles out there.

Let us know how yours shoots. I fully expect it to shoot awesome as every other one I've seen has shot awesome and I've shot a couple and seen had friends that had others, that they love too.
