Of all the rifles ever made, those are the only 2 I'd NEVER suggest any one ever buy.

Look at the Stevens 200, or Marlin in the same price range and have a MUCH better gun than either of those. For just a little more the Weatherby Vanguards are selling at many places for around $350. You can often find Remington 700 ADL's for the same price. There are much better choices on used racks.

+2 on the Marlin. They're a little less readily available due to them not being sold at the big box stores, but if you want one, you can find one. I bought 2 over the last year. I did a couple tweaks such as floated the barrels and installed metal trigger guards. Whatever you get in a rifle, disassemble it and make sure the hardware is tight to the action and loc-tite the scope base. It's amazing how accurate the newer economy (don't call them cheap) rifles are. I would avoid the 770.

Don't own either, but have handled and shot both.
I prefer the Mossberg. We got one for my dad for Christmas the year before last because we were broke and he wanted a .30-06. It's a dandy rifle for the $244 we paid for it. He slapped a Bushnell Banner on it and it shoots plenty accurate. The only thing I don't like about it is you can work the bolt while it's on safety. That stinks because if you try and shoot it and the bolt is up a little, it won't fire. That's the only negative I have about it.
