Looking to pick up my first muzzleloader and am looking for opinions. I have been looking at the CVA line hard and really like them. I want some opinions from you guys on what i should be looking at. I'm looking to stay in the $250ish range but less is always better. I plan on scoping it and i want it in .50cal.

Thanks
Adam

You'll have better luck in the Black Powder section with this topic. Good luck.

look around and you might find a thompson center omega for $250, if not you can walk into walmart anytime and get one for $300. It really is a great gun. You will be happy at the difference in quality between it and the CVA line.

I picked up a NIB Omega a while back at Cabelas. It was in the Bargin cave, think it was marked down to 225.00 or something and I had a coupon and than bonus points. Think I have about 50-70.00 bucks in it.

It's treated me well

Up the budget and get the best - Savage 10 ML. Cry once and shoot teeny groups the rest of your life.

But if you cannot up the budget, the spanish made ones (CVA, Traditions) with a plain plastic stock can usually be found on clearance right after season for $100. Even the basic non-break inline CVA is only $117 during the season at walmart, and it shoots well. My friend has one. Just limit your charges to around 100 gr triple 7 or 120 gr of other BP, max, in those spanish guns.

One other thing: Knights went out of business, but you may be able to find one on sale somewhere ( one of the last ones) - if you can, jump on it - these are quality guns at a reasonable price.

+1 on Knight

Even though they are out of business, there are a ton of these rifles still around, and they are good quality. Find a sporting goods store that is trying to clearance them out and get one or two.

I susgest u save up a few more dollars and buy a Savage ML ll. Not only does it have a sweet accu-trigger but you can shoot smokeless powder in it. And accuracy is outstanding. 1-1.5" all day long. Check gunbroker for a used one. You should be able to pick one up for around 300.00 used. Then save up some more money and top it with a quality scope. In scopes u get what u pay for. Happy hunting.

Can't find anything under $500. I'm not spending that much on a ML.

I'm not sure where you're looking, but T/C Omegas can easily be found for under $500.

Everything you say is accurate, but in fairness they are also long and heavy.

According to some articles I have recently read about CVA, I personally would not recommend them to anyone. Here is a link to a few of them.

Here is a link to many articles. Scroll down to the heading "SAFETY" and click on each heading. There you will find plenty of information about CVA and other companies associated to CVA's parent company.

This is one for legal info regarding CVA and its parent company.

Mikey!

Which is why the moment I acquire my thumbhole 10ML, it's going straight to the smith for a 20" cut and crown.

Now that has got me thinking.............a stainless one with a laminate stock and a twenty inch barrel sure would be nice.

I have read nothing but good things about either the T/C or the Savage. I too am in the market for one and have been doing a lot of research myself. Good luck with your search, but I agree the 20" mod may be just the ticket. I sure like that I can use smokeless powder too!

Take a look at the TC Triumph. Look around, you should be able to find one for $300-350 but worth more once you have one-
