Want AR 10 Type rifle

The Bushmasters that take FAL mags are what I'm personally interested in, but they're the odd one out when it comes to magazine compatability, while the other two major manufacturers have their own problems.

The Remington R-25 is probably not a bad idea if you just want "a AR type .308" considering a fairly low price and such.

I have an R-25 and after some trigger work I am happy with it. Rock River Arms makes a better gun for less money if you want to get on the waiting list. Armalite has some nice ones too.

I am lucky to own a few, my 2 favorites are an older Bushmaster BAR10 with skeleton stock and A2 configuration and their Izzy muzzle brake and a couple of Armalite AR10A2s, thinking of getting one in the carbine configuration. love my Armalites. DPMS and Rock River make em, but Rock Rivers are hard to come by, wanted one, but couldnt find one,so got me another Armalite.

The Bushmasters that took fal mags had major bolt breakage problems. RRA makes the newer improved version that still takes FAL mags. Really there is no reason to buy one now that the mag hi-cap ban ended.
Of the lower priced DI AR-10's Armalite is tops. From there the sky's the limit. LMT is great as are POF and LWRC for piston guns. Also PWS makes some very cool ar15 and ar10 piston guns.
IF it's just a range toy then you might go pick up a DPMS. "I would not trust a DPMS in a pinch." They use a carbine length gas system witch is bad also they don't chrome line there barrels. Still they are affordable and take the best AR-10 mag, magpul p-mag. Also check out CMMG they recently came out with an ar-10 that takes the p-mags. I know they make a good ar15 but don't really know about the new ar-10 type gun. Anyway good luck! .308 battle rifles are fun!

Now that Armalite has (or will have) their "A" model out that uses orginal AR10/SR25 pattern mags, that's the way I'd go. I will be replacing my "B" model upper and lower as soon as the "A"s are available as parts.

With that said even their "B" models that use modified M14 pattern mags are hard to pass up. I just like the idea of true forged upper and lower receivers. It allow the receivers to retain strenght while not needing to be as bulky with extra reenforcements. Compare an Armalite upper/lower to a DPMS or other cast/extruded/billet option.

Armalite has no more or less to do with AR-pattern rifles than any other current manufacturer. Their "AR-10" is not the same as the original. (None of them are.)

(I hadn't heard Armalite was bending and making a rifle to take the KAC mags.) Armalite made a calculation when they released their .308 rifle during the AWB. They figured that if they made it compatible with magazines that were plentiful and cheap and could be modified to be used in the rifle, thereby not getting stuck with a rifle limited to ten rounds. When the AWB expired, no one else thought this was a good idea. KAC designed their own rifle, which DPMS and POF have also picked up on, using the same pattern. Armalite made a diagonal cut on the corner joint between their upper and lower that few, if any other manufacturers will match. When the military bought the KAC pattern for their SASS rifle, it instantly became more accepted and standardized. When Magpul started making magazines for it, my last concern went away. (Their market domination is evidenced by this news of Armalite accepting this pattern of magazine now. I wonder if they will also retire their proprietary cut and just be compatible with everyone else.)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the DPMS rifles. They are very reliable and sub-MOA accurate out of the box with match-grade ammo. If you handload for it, remember, you need to full-length size, not just neck size them.

The DPMS .308's I have shot have all been good rifles, but folks should be aware that DPMS does take a few short cuts in the manufacturing process to keep the cost down. Doesn't necessarily make them inferior, just different.

To the OP, I would look at ArmaLite or CMMG, if you have thicker wallet then LMT.

I have a DPMS SASS that I like. DPMS sells a large range of models. I don't think it is reasonable to clump them all together.

Most DPMS-bashing is theoretical. I doubt you will find a DPMS owner who regrets purchasing their rifle. I don't.

What is your budget? If you are looking to get a top shelf rifle take a look at the LaRue OBR, JP LRP-07, or some of the KAC offerings. They are by no means cheap but you will have one heck of a great rifle. If you are more budget minded there still many option, many listed above, that will fit your needs.

I've had my DPMS LR 308B for over 5 years.
during that time and well over 2000 rounds downrange, it has been totally reliable, no jams, no failures, no problems. Last Saturday, it went with me to the range again and as usual printed its 10 round groups at just under one inch. As usual. Using my handloads. It uses magazines that are commonly available. I ordered the rifle from DPMS with the 18" Cryo barrel, JP trigger & Hogue grip (since changed to Magpul MOE+). Money well spent IMHO.
