A couple months ago I was in my Local Gun shop chatting with a couple guys that work there when I noticed two Sig 220s in one of the display cases.
One was Two tone with 2 7 round mags and night sights and no visible wear. The other was all parkerised with Three 8 round mags, Night sights, an accessory rail, and a bit more wear than the other.

They told me I could have either for 489.00 + Tax. I knew I didn't have the extra cash at the time but they let me put it on layaway so I choose the one with the accessory rail and better mags. They rubber banded the mags to the gun and carried it off to the Layaway room.

Fast forward to yesterday, I go in to pay the gun off. I fill out the paperwork, give them my permit and License and one of the guys brings the gun out but with no mags. I ask him where they were and he gives me a confused look, then tells me there were no mags with the gun. He checked the tag and it did say there were two additional 8 round mags with the gun so he went back to check again. Of course the mags were not there so he asked me to come back in an hour with the boss got back.

My friend and I head back over there about 90 minutes later and the boss and Manager had came back and helped look for the mags. The best they could do were two old 7 round mags that had spots of rust on them. THis is where I am not sure if I was out of line or not. I told them that these were not near as good as the mags originally included with the gun and I didn't feel that they were an acceptable replacement. They gave me no flack about this, and appeared to agree with me on it. However I am second guessing myself and wonder if I should have taken the offered replacements.

Anyway they finally just decided to order me two 8 round mags for the gun since I was not going to take delivery of it without some arrangement to replace the lost mags.

So I now have the gun a holster at half price and the promise of two new mags.

So was I out of line in not accepting the offered replacement Mags considering the great deal they gave me on the gun in the first place? I am friends with these people and I don't like having to be disagreeable with them on anything. But I felt I was in the right.

IMHO, you were in the right. You put a certain setup on layaway, with mags in a condition that you approved of. Its their fault that they "lost" those mags, and they should be willing to replace them with equal or better mags.

Of course you were right. A deal was struck and that's that. Sounds like you were able to remain friends so it all worked out. How does she shoot for ya?

Heck I work in a gun shop and I think you were in the right. Unfortunately little things like mags get misplaced a lot, and recently we had a rash of incidents where guns were sold without their boxed by incompetent employees. All the same, it's the store's responsibility to straighten those things out, not the customer's. I say enjoy your new gun and mags. :)

Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I was busy last night after I got her and it is pretty nasty out today. I am kinda afraid to go out in this nasty weather with my bronchitis the way it is right now. I am in the middle of giving the gun a very good cleaning and oiling.

I want to emphasize that at no point did the people at the store indicate that they were unwilling to work with me and make things right. I guess I just feel bad that I was so insistent LOL. They are always good to me so I hate to complain.

So next time you go back, make a few light comments about hoping that you didn't come across to strongly and leave it at that. Sounds like all's well in the end...

If you are friends with these people like you said then they should be just as upset about disappointing a valued customer. I wouldn't have taken crappy mags, it was good of them to order you new ones and knock some off the price.

I would write a short note to the manager and owner assuring them that you like the gun, are very happy with the way they handled the misplaced mags and that you are looking forard to receiving the other mags for your fine acquisition...

Most people have given up the art of letter writing and a short note in the mail may go a long way toward soothing any ruffled feathers.

Why write a letter? I talk to the CEO every other day almost :p

Seriously I made it clear that I was happy with the solution and would let them know how i liked the gun. I have purchased well over a hundred guns from this store in the past 8 or 9 years. I could never see myself shopping anywhere else.

You were certainly right in not wanting to accept the two mags that were not pat of the original deal. It doesn't really sound like this was an overt attempt to cheat you on the sale but probably somebody either misplace the original mags or sold them to somebody else (maybe the person that bought the other pistol) in the hopes that the store could replace them before you came in to pick up your pistol.

It sounds like the store manager made a good effort to make you happy and it sounds like you got a better deal out of it.

A letter to the store manager or the owner would be a good touch and lets them know you are a satisfied customer and one who may continue to purchase there and possibly recommend the shop to other people. Customer service appears to be a lost art in a lot of stores anymore. This sounds like an exception.

You were exactly right. I would have done the same thing - in a nice way of course.

Sounds like they are cooperating on this and it should end well in the end. I would not take the gun without an acceptable agreement being made - which it sounds like is being done. If they did not cooperate on this then I would want my money back and not shop there again.

Better that they are working with you on this.

Good luck.

Luke

I'm upset.
I've waited the past 3 weeks for a Browning catalogue...it finally came to day and the mail-man let the rain ruin it.
>_<
The first good rain in the past two months too!

Slightly miffed????

Yes

Cursing and beating on the counter with name-calling and ancestry-tracing upset?

No.

Sounds like the store did a very good job of correcting their gaffe with the magazines.

No Worries

You've been purchasing about 10-12 guns a year from them for several years? You're exactly the type of loyal customer who should expect and get their best service, and I'm sure they feel the same way. I wouldn't worry about it, they did the right thing and so did you.

Michael

I have never put a gun on layaway. Don't you get some sort of reciept with it saying exactly what you are laying away? I bet that would help them keep up with it a bit better.

You're so far in the right you'd need binoculars to see center field.

Easy answer...

were you a jerk?? If you were decent but felt you were owed something other than offered, that's just business. If I have a dispute in dealing with someone and get it resolved to the satisfaction of all parties, that may well be better than having everything right the first time. It proves that I can work with people and have things come out right.

But....

If you were a jerk, well then......you were a jerk

If you want to be nice to them, go to Domino's at lunch-time and get a "3 for $5 deal". Take them the pizza for lunch. Trust me...you'll get a LOT more than $15 worth of good from it.

friends come and go......enemies accumulate

Do the guys at the shop drink pop or coffee?

If it had been my shop, you would have gotten at least one of the "bad" mags if not both AND two new replacements. ticket says two 8 round mags you get 2 eight round mags. simple.

I asked about the pop or coffee, when we worked at the shop, sometimes the most welcome things are the little things. a case of Mountain Dew or Coke (cold) or a bag of good starbucks or whatever coffee would be a nice gesture to say "hey guys thanks for being cool about it."

You weren't rude about it and you were only asking what you were paying for. You were totally in the right on this one. if you had accepted the sub-standard mags than it would be like ordering a car with a sunroof and them giving you one with just a hole in the top. You went about it in the right way so you have no reason to feel guilt or regret in how you handled it.

+1. Never hurts to bring some donuts or something like that along with
a thanks. Granted you did right and the 100 + weapons you've bought
have surely helped keep the lights on, but you how it goes.. ;)

Trust me, they don't feel cheated by ordering you new mags. They're just glad you aren't PO'd about it.

In a word, NO. The mags were a part of the great deal so you had every right to expect them. It sounds like you handled the situation properly. You noticed the problem and brought it to their attention in a reasonable way. They offered you a compromise which you rightly turned down so they offered to make it right as originally agreed. And everyone is still friends so it worked out.

If you thought it was wrong . . . .
and THEY thought it was wrong . . . .
and they went out of their way to correct the wrong . . . .
then they must have thought your request was reasonable.

If the buyer and the seller agree on the best thing to do, I don't see how there could be any question.
