wax-waterproof

so, in another thread, i read that using johnsons paste wax would pretty much waterproof a wood stock. seems logical, so i went and bought a gigantic tub of it (enough to do at least 50 rifles, but it was the only size i could find). and i am now wondering about waxing the checkering. should i wax this as well as the rest of the stock? i know there is no finish in the checkering, so it seems logical if you want to keep water out, you would wax this area. but i have never done this, so i figured i had better ask. also, how often should i wax the rifle(s)? thanks.

I not only use it on the checkering, but on the barrels as well. Water just sort of beads up and slides off.

As for how often, if my gun is out in the rain, I usually clean and oil it pretty carefully afterwords. Then I apply wax again. Other than that, not too often.

more likely to be water resistant as opposed to water proof. I wax my rifle and pistol wood and metal after every cleaning. jwr

I don't care for the smell of Johnsons paste wax, so use Trewax instead. I apply a bit to checkering with a toothbrush, then buff with a shoe shine brush to make checkering shine.

If you can find it try Simonize Car wax

Minwax is good. Carnuba -- the stuff they put in "stock wax" for guns and charge $150 / gal.
