We warned about the slippery slope...first guns, then ammo, now this.......

One teenager died at the hands of one man using a machete in an isolated incident.
This is a pretext for a politician to ban the machete. For the children.

If this isn't an outright howling indictment of our society, that we've grown to accept this crap from New York politicians, I don't know what is.

Time to kick New York out of the Union.

I am afraid I don't understand why you quoted my post. If what the Senator said is correct, there is no ban.

Not a lawyer, but maybe placing machetes in the dangerous weapon catagory carried with intent to cause harm is a legal thing for increased prison sentences. I have no problem with that either. Basically, the whole deal is that in NY, the Senator doesn't want people strolling down the street with machetes hanging from their belt. But it still takes intent beyond possession. I don't see many people like that other than landscapers.

But it still takes intent beyond possession.

If I see a gang of Arabs carrying machetes in a mall I will probably assume their intent isn't to do yard work. That kind of thing should be punished just like carrying around a running chainsaw at a soccer game. Those soccer crowds get pretty darn rowdy and are known to use all sorts of things as weapons. If I saw a gang carrying 2 foot sections of rebar I'd wonder about them too. That is unless there's a concrete job going on close by.

Still just the act of carrying those things doesn't prove intent. It would just make me paranoid. We can't legislate based on paranoia if we know what's good for us. If we truly did that we would be voting every do gooder out of office in a heart beat.

I would imagine its around the same number that AR have.
I don't know about that the border gangs around here are fond of decapitating people out in the middle of the desert with a machete and leaving them there once they are done video taping it

Why is it that one of the most dangerous things on this planet, one that has killed more people, destroyed more property and caused more misery than almost anything you can imagine.......can be bought in most places by children, is completely unrestricted by any government that I am aware of, and is so common that you can buy them almost anywhere.

I'm talking about matches.

BAN THE DAMN THINGS!!!!! Or at least require a background check to buy them and a three day waiting period.

While we're at it lets throw in a $200 dollar transfer tax, in case your buddy asks for a light.

It's great to see all the outpouring of support for this, undoubtedly driven by a genuine concern for people's safety, great law proposal.

If I may summarize the suggestions, we should petition the esteemed Senator to include the following items on his ban list, along with machetes:

- baseball bats
- hammers
- 2x4 and any other piece of wood that can be held and swung with one or both hands
- glass bottles
- tire irons
- sticks and stones
- rebar, iron bar, iron angle, and basically any piece of metal that can be held and swung with one or both hands
- ice picks
- motorcycle chains
- any barbesque tool that has a sharp or pointed edge
- tent spikes
- hatchets
- meat cleavers
- dough rollers, especially the ones with marble cylinders
- ski poles

feel free to add to the list, I suggest someone more skillful than I should start a website where anyone could add their own deadly weapon idea to the list, we should send the Senator and his electorate the link along with a Thank You note.

Meanwhile, ISIS just keeps murdering innocent civilians by any means that tickles their toosies.
Makes one wonder who is in league with who,,,

This is one thread that should be closed. It's got nothing to do with firearms, there is no ban, and I think everyone here agrees that if someone attacks people with a machete they should be punished.

I frankly love my Machete. It is more handy than a camp ax because it is more like a multitool. Blunt the rear, sharpen the trailing edge and keep the leading edge just sharp enough. You can use it to chip, split or chop wood, clear land for a tent or you can use the blunt end to break up material. With a hand on the back, you can shave wood and make a fine tinder. I have used the flat side of the blade to pound tent stakes. One person uses it to kill someone and this fool goes off half-cocked. What if it had been an ax? I doubt he would want to ban them.
