So I see a guy at the range; I catch him there once every month or so. I ask if he likes his S&W Shield. He says it is new to him and he bought it six months ago and forgot to take in the Michigan Pistol Sales slip to the Sheriff but went in with it today and the person behind the window told him it was too late to turn it in and there was nothing he could do except now have an unregistered gun.

Anyone know Michigan law and how this would work? Seems like an odd thing for the sheriff's office to tell him. I told him to call State Police since they run the Michigan pistol registry.

I have known this guy a little bit for 25 years. He is in the medical profession. Upstanding guy. I doubt he is lying. He seemed puzzled but not worried. I thought it was illegal to have an unregistered handgun in Michigan.

Thoughts?

So once you miss the window, you are guilty of nonregistration. So if you go in and try to register it, you are admitting guilt over having an unregistered gun and could be fined. If you do nothing, then you just have a gun that is not registered and the most that could be done to you is if some agency fined you $250 for not registering.

But if you have the gun and did not turn in the paperwork, it is not illegal to have the gun itself as long as the purchase was legal.

Seems odd to me, but I guess there is a sort of logic to it. I guess the person at the window was trying to save him $250 dollars and did not want to fine him.

Most "gun laws" are written by people who do not know which end of a "gun" the bullet comes out. So of course we end up with a patch work of laws that often no one seems to know what they really mean. It so often comes down to some "official" and what they "feel or think" the law means. My state recently passes a law on "assault weapons" that makes the Ruger 10/22 and assault weapon. When you buy one now you have to jump through extra hoops because you are buying an evil assault weapon. :fire::fire:

The main thing I got from this thread is that I'm glad I don't live in Michigan. What a mess.
There are other benefits to Michigan that don’t require a human to remember to drop a slip off in ten business days.
And if that was the one deal breaker, you must buy a lot of handguns a year...

Even then, I have forgotten once. I brought in the state’s copy, handed it in through the window and wished the clerk a nice day. She held up her hand, for me to wait, read it, smiled and wished me a nice day as well.
As it should be.

For some humans a small bit of authority is all they get. They must wield that power, else why have it? So they impress upon any they can that they “are in charge”. And their one real power is refusal to do anything. To just sit there. Do nothing, for pay. Just so they can feel bigger about themselves.

Why else would they not take it? There is no line that states when they receive the document.
The window clerk is the only person to see it. That was the person impeding freedom and causing future problems.

Yes, my governor is a colossal Jackass, one that wouldn’t know science if it kicked her husband in the motorboat. But all of Michigan is not Lansing or Detroit. That’s what everyone wants it to be, but most of Michigan is paradise.

Ha, you want to talk about oppression by little bits of paper? Her semi-autistic self just mandated masks, yesterday. After the peak has gone by.
She punishes us, to thumb her nose a Trump.
Thus, I thumb my nose at her.
A $200 fine for not wearing a mask while walking down a sidewalk alone? Show me the officer that will write it! This ain’t Lansing!

But, there is so much more to the state in which a person lives, than just the State in which they live...

But, yeah, we got problems. Who doesn’t?

At least it isn’t a desert.:)

I see you love just far enough North to be country...
I have friends in Traverse city. Every year they came to the UP to hunt and hang out for Thanksgiving.
The state isn't all bad. But the little things like this, no constitutional carry, etc made it an easy choice for me to leave.
The big cities definitely rule the state just like New York.

Yep.. a lifelong Michigander here. I live in the northern part of the lower peninsula where the winters are brutal (they weren't when I was young) but the rest of the seasons are what keeps me here. Can't imagine living somewhere that has no ready access to the inland lakes and waterways... and of course, the spectacular hunting.

We vacationed a couple of years ago in Manistee forest area near Irons MI. One of the nicest places for hiking and fishing, but close enough to hit Lake MI towns. Saw all kinds of tracks in the forest, from deer and bear to big cats. Far cry from the big cities of MI, sometimes forest only for miles.

I especially remember a place close by there, the Dublin General Store in Wellston. One stop shopping; a large supermarket, liquor store, hardware store, fishing equipment, landscaping supplies, and even a gun store, everything under one roof. One of their specialties was jerky, an entire wall of it, from exotic meats to just plain beef and pork. Best jerky ever!

They burned down last summer, but are reopening at the end of July at almost twice the size, and will now include a pharmacy in addition.

Makes me glad I live in PA. We have PICS — PA Instant Check System which is like NICS but just in PA. It happens when the gun is purchased, and that is all the only condition to firearms purchase in PA. So now I can add MI to the list of states I will never move to.

It doesn't appear to me that the urban areas of Michigan are any less gun friendly than the urban areas in most states. Seems that most large municipalities have or at least tried to have some sort of extra regulations. The farther away you get from those areas, the less likely it is to be attempted or enforced. My reasons for striking Michigan from any potential list of future residence has less to do with gun laws and everything to do with TTUN ;)

MI is not that bad. Comparing it to the NE or west coast is simply out of the question entirely.

The handgun registration is the most half arsed registration in existence and as can be seen, can be bypassed entirely with no consequence. You just have to have the Purchase Permit to buy the gun whether from a dealer or individual.

Back when I was selling guns in MI, it seemed like CWP holders could bypass the Purchase Permit somehow. Maybe they still had to have it “safety inspected”. Can’t remember because I never had a CWP there.

I was born and raised in MI. This is such a beautiful state. Awesome hunting and fishing.
Compared to some other state's gun laws I never knew ours were so terrible that it would keep people from moving here. Dropping off a piece of paper to the local P.D. within 10 days of a pistol purchase just doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me. I usually just swing by on my way home from buying the gun.

Can he sell the gun to you and you sell it back to him, give him a receipt and him be GTG?

Not without a transfer by an FFL.

near Irons MI.
Ah, the town my family founded when they came from Ireland.
Where my grandmother was born and lived in a dirt floor cabin, to become the first of us to graduate college as a teacher.

I see I my be a bit biased for the Great Lake State.:)

Some years ago I was visiting the Sheriff at the time, a friend, and we were just chatting when a guy brought in his gun permit (the piece of paper from the dealer). the lady at the counter took it, looked at it wished the guy a good day. After he left she put it in the circular file...I know the Sheriff saw her do that,,he said “That’s what we do with all of them,,state doesn’t require us to do anything else with it”

I have a friend who has a cabin not far from that store. Spent many hunting seasons in that area. I've spent a lot of money at the Dublin General Store. Great place... great area.

Okay, do it through an FFL.

Well, yeah, but that’s $40 each transfer. Better than a $250 fine I suppose!:)

You don't need a FFL to do a person to person transfer of a handgun, all you need a purchase permit or in this case each would need one.

Oy, has it been so long since I’ve bought one without a CPL? :D

Yes, in lieu of a carry license, a purchase permit is necessary to buy a pistol in Michigan. I vaguely remember needing it for my first centerfire pistol. But I needed that for the CPL too, so it all ran together.

As if anyone needed to pile on my beloved peninsular paradise, it is also illegal to idle your car in your driveway in Roseville.

And you make not chain an alligator to a fire hydrant either.

But what place doesn’t have some silly laws?;)
In Oklahoma, a female is not allowed to do her own hair unless licensed by the state...

CPL don't help purchase a handgun anymore. If you buy a handgun from a FFL they call it into NICS or send it by computer, if person to person then you need a purchase permit.
