After 4 months, I got a reply back from the DOJ.

Yup, the SAIGA is banned, even though it really isn't an AK. It's considered to be an AK class weapon.

Oh well, so sad. If I could I'd buy two saiga x39s in a second at about $300 a pop.

I'm curious as to what they actually said: could you elaborate? If for some reasons the details are messy, please consider PM-ing me. [I was under the impression that they had to be banned by make & model - is the Saiga listed?]

Thanks

Sorry that you have to live in such a socialist utopia.

HOWEVER, the SAIGA is most definitely an AK. It's basically everything that an AK is, minus a pistol grip and feed ramp. The latest model 7.62x39 rifles are coming in with mag dimples, for cryin' out loud!

(Not that I mind, I just picked one up myself and will be converting it back to its proper original form as soon as my parts come in from KVAR! )

The california DOJ has a nice dotPDF with a picture of everything semi auto and scarey looking
saiga.jpg

its 2.6 megs

The saiga has been on that list since 2001 as an AK series

Why is it they can list them as "AK" type rifles when they cannot do that with "AR" type rifles? Everyone is buying an off-list lower these days on that assumption.

That sure was a scary picture you showed there. My dog happened to glance at my laptop screen and he yiped when he saw it, ran in the corner and peed while he trembled. :) Seriously, if I lived in such a communist state I would move.
