Ummm... I hate to have to tell you this, but 7.62x39 ain't NATO; it's Russian commie. The 7.62mm NATO round is 7.62x51 which is also known as .308Winchester.

7.62x39 - .312" diameter bullet.
7.62x51 - .308" diameter bullet.

"x39" and "x51" refer to the case length.
