Well, the wife is out of town running a half-marathon in Nashville, so I had all day free for manly activities. I got up today, got in the car, and started driving the 3 hours from NYC to the Cabela's in Hamburg, PA. Of course, I knew I could not take any guns home with me, because I refuse to play by the rules put in place in the rather unenlightened leaders of our 5 boroughs. However, since I am moving soon, I have been thinking of getting back into reloading and I have forgotten the little I knew. So first on my list, new reloading manuals. I picked up the 49th Edition Lyman, Sierra's 5th Edition, and the 2nd Edition of Lee Modern Reloading. Looks like I have homework for a while. Picked up a couple of knives that were on clearance, because like guns, you can never have too many hunting knives. I also picked up two boxes of Lapua 308 Brass for $64.99 per 100 which was cheaper than Midway's price not including shipping and a neat Winchester Wooden box to keep it and move it in.

I spent probably five hours wandering the gun library, hunting and bargain cave sections of the store just soaking it all in. Got some things I needed (OK wanted) and met some nice people (employees and customers). I know most of you are saying, what's the big deal, you went to Cabela's. But when you live in the firearm wasteland (except for cops and criminals) that is NYC, a trip to Cabela's or BassPro is like a breath of fresh air. Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

Wasteland?

I believe the proper term is "firearms desert," isn't it?

Kinda like a "food desert" but for firearms?

:D

Clearly you need some relief from this.

Perhaps .gov would be kind enough to help finance (through stimulus, y'know) a string of small-biz local gun shops and related kiosks in your deprived and desperate area.

For the children, you understand.

Sounds like a fun day! Honestly, I give you credit for being able to make it in NYC. My younger brother lives there, and I have no idea how he does it. Frankly, there are a number of cities (and states) that I simply refuse to live in, just because I'm not willing to give up the enjoyment of my firearms.

Well, Arfin, you seem like an optimist, but I won't hold me breath waiting for the government to spend stimulus funds in a way that would help second amendment rights! I will of course submit your idea and, if approved, will give credit where credit is due and share my windfall when I receive it (millions? billions?). I am sure that there is no need to pay back this "free" money.

Kevin, I honestly have to say that this has been an adventure that I will remember for the rest of my life. It has been good for me professionally and there are many good things about living in the city. My problem is that "new and exciting" wore off in about 18 months and I am coming up on 4 years. I get back to Georgia and Texas to shoot some, so I still have visitation rights on all of my guns, but I miss the every weekend at the gun club with the wife (yes, I am a lucky, lucky man). You can't imagine how popular I am with the good friends and my brother that Have custody of my guns. Believe it or not, they are always pointing out to me items needed for my collection that they will be glad to care for in my absence. I have guns in 2 cities in two states, so they are always available when I get back for a visit. Seriously, I am glad that I have friends that I can trust with my guns and know that they will be used with care and always taken care of as well as i would do myself.

Unfortunately, it looks as if my next posting will be London or Dubai for 3 years. I am sure guns are out of the question for any expat in Dubai and even if I can have one in London, it will have to stay at the club. Oh well, in today's economy I am thankful for my job and I do like the work. I just wish that retirement or a posting in a gun friendly environment would fall into my lap, but retirement is not that far away and I will likely return to a more gun friendly environment soon.

Just count your blessings that you both live in such beautiful environs with gun friendly laws. I spent some time in Boise and thought it was beautiful and I was born in Colorado. Safe shooting to everyone.

Used to live in SE PA, so Cabela's was an hour away. spent alot of time there and knew the store manager, Bruce. Moved to Texas and Cabela's is 1/2 hour away. How nice is that!

Never have been in a Cabelas store. My "cabelas" are visits to Bass Pro. I seldom make it to SE PA anymore even though I have family in PA. It is just not in my GPS or is it radar? I do visit Sportsman Warehouse in TN from time to time but it is certainly no Bass Pro experience.

Wow I feel sorry for you guys.:banghead:
I live in Minnesota and I have two Cabela's that are one hour away and maybe two and a half hours away from me.:) One to the north and one to the south.
I have a Gander mountain that is 25 miles from me and I drive past a Scheels to get there. I stop at Scheels all the time to get reloading supplies as the Gander store no longer carries that stuff.:what:
A Gander to the east about 60 miles from me, they have reloading stuff.
A Dicks sporting store about 60 miles away also. I don't like Dicks, To yuppie for me.:neener:
No brass Pro shops in the state, but I can mail order.
Wow I feel lucky to live in a great state like Minnesota.

I am 30 minutes from Cabela's and 30 minutes from Bass Pro. Cheaper than dirt is 30 minutes away also. There is at least one big gun show every month here. chris3

Back in the days when milsurps were cheap and plentiful, I would surf the pawn shops on my motorcycle. Many a day I would ride home with a rifle strapped to my sissy bar.....chris3

I feel bad for ya, having to drive that far for some simple shopping,
In the "med-city" here believe it or not I have a Gander Mountain,Fleet Farm,Dick's all within city limits We have private shops also "Wild-goose gun shop right on Broadway of our booming city and Coyote Creek on the other end of town.
There are a bunch of Private FFL's with shops but you have to look hard / ask the right people, Cabella's is a 45-minute drive from me so i only make it there about 5-times a year,,, I feel spoiled !! :neener:

I like to go to Cabela's after gun shows to buy stuff that the gun shows had but was way over priced.

Nothing wrong in going to Cabela's. I like to go just to look around and see if any ammunition is on sale. Also bought a handgun there once that was much cheaper than anything in neighboring stores.

I love going to my local Cabelas and seeing what they have for ammunition. I can pretty much always find something I want. They generally have some good deals on ammo and I like the ammo cans their bulk stuff comes in.

I've got one about 2 miles away. Does Cabela's offer classes on how to reload?
You've got Dillon Precision right there in NW Phoenix area.

I have a sales job. Go past Cabelas, Bass Pro, and about a dozen gun shops every week. Don't stop in all of them. Cabelas used to have really great deals in the bargain cave a few years ago. I went there couple of weeks. Not so much any more. Other than clothing, I can get considerably better prices at local shops.

There are no Cabellas in Ohio, there is one in Dundee Michigan and In Wheeling West Virginia. Both accessable from Ohio but it's a trip from Central Ohio.

I can't immagine living in NYC, D.C; Chicago, etc. The fact that there is the 2nd amendment, what it says, and yet the reality of these cities is the quite the opposite.

I do look around at gun shows and in Vance's (Gun shop) and wonder how many of you guys are there too.....:scrutiny:

I have a Cabela's, LL Bean, and a few gun stores (one that has me on credit) all within 40 minutes.

I luv Maine!

Hello the camp!
Sooner, I feel your pain. Tucson is a bit over an hour away and the Valley another two or so. I have done swimmingly by on-line shopping. I reserve primers and powder for local purchase due to hazmat, but I have a good source in Tucson. That said, I get bp delivered--10-14/lb by the 25lb case but includes hazmat.
JB, I worked at the Sportsmans Whse in Mesa before I moved to Sierra Vista. Among other things, I was touted as the reloading guru. As I put it, my cohort, Bill, was a benchrester--made small holes far away. I was, am I mean, a kaboy shooter--I expend ordnance. I was asked to do a reloading seminar for their in-store show'n'tells. While I never got around to it, and this was in '07, they may have put one together by now.
I can't seriously recall how I 'learned' to reload. My first setup was, I mean is since I still have it, an RCBS Jr. in .44mag; it was on sale at Smitty's for $30. My 'tutor' was the Lyman handbook, 44th ed, spiral-bound so it laid flat. That was over 40 yr and a gazillion rounds ago; and the Lyman is still a go-to resource, even though I have 3 newer editions of it.
If you get good equipment and go slow--and wait quite a while before you try to hotrod--you will probably fare well in reloading. If you run into questions, you're in the right company for encouragement and advise. See ya round the campfire. mm

Went to Cabela's in Hamburg on the way back from a vacation in Vermont, it was a spur of the moment thing and we spent at least an hour and a half there...could have spent more.

We have a Gander Mountain (nothing special) and Bass Pro that are a mile apart in Richmond. The Bass Pro is pretty nice, but nothing compared to Cabela's in Hamburg.

They were supposed to build a Cabela's about 5 miles from my house, but apparently that project is no more.

haha i'm central maine. even cabelas is over an hour away for me. its very rare for me to make it all the way to KTP but its amazing!
